The Cannondale seems to be eyeing up the competition...

Friend of mine purchased the Schwinn recently, and brought it for me for a full run through, and my 1995 Cannondale R300 is in the rear. Both bikes are of a VERY similar vintage, both with full RSX groupsets (Cannondale has downtube shifters, where the Schwinn has brifters).

Anyone have any info on the Schwinn? Year estimates? The quill seatpost is a little funky, but it seems solidly built.

Probably about a 1989. Look at this page for specifics on original build. Also take a look at the head badge for a 4 digit stamped number running vertically. The first 3 digits are the day of the year. The last digit the year in the decade. I'm guessing it was upgraded in the mid '90s to RSX.

Is your Cannondale a '92-'93?

I THINK my cannondale is a 95 judging by the spec sheets and color scheme, haven't verified with the S/N.

IIRC, Schwinn determined the model name of these bikes by using the birth month and year of the guys in charge of the project. ie: 564 + May 1964.

I don't know if this is true or just a good story.

The Cannondale must be older than 92-93 based on the under-the-top-tube cable stops.

It would be interesting to read a rode test comparo between the two bikes.

In '92 the 2.8 Series frame was introduced on the higher end road models, replacing the 3.0 frame. They are unique as that's the only year the 3.0's rear brake's top tube cable routing was employed for that series. Following years saw the 2.8's top tube rear brake cable moved to the lower LHS of the top tube and the housing became a two piece housing rather than one single run.

What's remarkable about the OP's Cannondale is that it is still in original condition. I'd also like to read about a comparison of the two

My typo mistake! I meant to write newer than 92. Duh! I had an R500 Series 3.0, circa 93-94. It still had the top cable guides.

Great idea for a bike repair stand. I may have to give that a try.
