Cannondale Ad Accurate??

Can this CL ad be accurate??

https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/3962486569.html

This frame looks WAY too tall to be a 25", but if it is a 1983 model, 25" was as large as the went.
Tabs on the seatstays are correct for '83-'85. In '86 they were replaced with a bridge that also
served as a cable stop for the model with cantilever brakes.
I can't tell about the top tube cable guides: metal or plastic.

BUT, that head tube looks WAY too long for a 25": frame. I have several of both sizes and
that critter definitely appears to be a 27" frame to me.

compare with this one:

https://chattanooga.craigslist.org/bik/3917785108.html

I emailed the owner, but have not received a reply.

What say ye Cannondale aficionados??

Looks like a 27" to me. Could be Cannondale did not list the 27" in their catalog or it was custom made.

+1 That headtube is WAAAAAAAY too long for a 25. Almost makes it look like it's got 650c wheels.

I don't know if they made custom frames or not. Hmmm

Same thought had crossed my mind, but that head tube is still way longer than that of a 25" frame. And, they would
probably had a hard time finding brakes to fit. Although there does appear to be a load of space between the rear tire and the caliper. I know from experience that there is not a whole bunch of room there. However, I have not seen Velocity Deep V rims in 650.

Another observation is that the frame has a water bottle cage on the seat tube.
This is inconsistent with the '83 and '84 models. The catalog depicts the ST500 without and
the ST400 WITH seat tube bosses in '85.
So, the mystery grows.

Does look bigger than a 25" frame...standover height would solve that mystery for sure.

If you're looking for an older C'dale that is for sure a 25" frame, here's a better deal (though it's not a touring rig) (no affiliation with the seller): https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/3968723178.html

Thanks, but it actually IS an ST model-notice the gap between the rear tire and the seat tube. ST for sure.
I prefer the 27". I just picked up a 27" ST-1000 F/F that I found on CL in Fredericksburg. 1993 model. Canti's and 135mm rear spacing.
VERY rare!
I also own 3 25 inchers, as well, and a BUNCH (like 12) 63cm SR's from that time frame.
But, a SUPER deal on that bike !!

I stand corrected. I assumed it was an 85/86 SR, but you're right, it's a touring rig. It is a great deal, it would fit me, and my wife would kill me if I got it Already have an '85 SM600 frame on the way for a single speed build I'm going to do. I'm pretty tempted though to send this to my b-i-l (who also happens to be my height, and who lives in the Heights) but I think he'd decline simply because he doesn't have the space for it. It's most definitely NOT a mid-90's like the listing says though.

The presence of a head tube pump peg puts it at '86 or later.
I have a 25" '85 ST500 and it has no peg.
Interesting point: the Big 'un appears to have a pump peg also.
I would be really interested to get the serial # from that one. Seems like some sort of '85-'86 cross-year model.
At any rate, I would like to own it!

It does look bigger than a 25" but he is posting a link to the catalog which leads to beleive he knows how to measure a frame.

Possibly,
However, as I am virtually certain that he is wrong on the year, all else is cast into doubt.

Ron, That frame is at least a 27" frame. I tried to compare the head tube with the fork legs and I measure ~12" for the head tube. How long is the head tube on your T1000? I copied and blew up the photo of the brakes and while it became very grainy, I think the calipers are Tektro R558s, which are long reach calipers and nearly at the end of their adjustment so possibly a 700C conversion.(?)

Brad

PS I think the SR500 depicted in the catalog just doesn't have the cage screws in the seat tube.

Would his name be Mike by chance? There's a guy on the Sunday morning vintage bike ride who is super tall, and rides to the meeting spot in the Heights. He's got some pretty cool bikes, though so large I cannot even stand over them.,,,,BD

I'd call it an '86 ST (first year for plastic cable guides, still had some funky filleting going on, '86 top tube decal) with a 700c conversion. Could be an early '86 based on the rear rack mount.
27" frame, possibly a larger custom size.

Just realize catalogs are printed well before actual production, so everything is subject to change.

Sellers so rarely get size right, I really just ignore what they say the size is. Looks like a 27 to me.

A seller around here recently had a bike for sale, and reported the size to be 48'.......

Maybe the guy has a yacht and got mixed up???

The head tube on my 27" measure 9 7/8", and the 25" is 7 7/8".
You may be right about the catalog pic, but the bike appears to have a pump peg, which didn't start til '86.
Velocity makes the Deep V rims in 700c.

I don't know him personally. It is a CL ad.

Ahh, the Doctor is IN !!
You may be correct. I have asked for the s/n. That would clear things up a bunch.
I cannot tell if the guides are plastic or painted metal, so dunno.
I wish he would answer my emails, tho.
I did get the T-1000 frame, and it IS 135mm w/cantis.Made in June '92, but marketed as '93 I believe.
Now, if I could just get a number for the Anthracite paint...

Nah, Ross, and he rides around a nice blue 1990 SM500 I picked up for him. He and I are both roughly 6'4.

I think he was talking about that one! I seriously can't believe it's still there. So many flippers in this market, and while it seems like there are tons of good deals to be had, those are outnumbered at least 3 to 1 by the folks trying to get $300 for some boat anchor.

Good luck in getting that seller to answer you re: the touring C'dale. If you need help possibly facilitating let me know, I can't do a whole lot (7 month old at the house) but I could possibly go pick up the bike and drop it off at a reputable LBS and have them dismantle and pack it for shipping.

Yep, flipper got it, did absolutely nothing to it, and it's back up for sale for $260, the very next day...

Yup. Bummer.
And, he has it listed as an incorrect size. But, Cannondale fools all but the educated when it comes to frame sizing anyway.

As for the guy with the 'Dale in question in the original post, he did respond to my email, saying that he had others to respond to before he gets to me. No big deal one way or the other.
I certainly don't need another 27 incher with caliper brakes.
But........that has never stopped me before. ;-)
