So, I need to get wider drop handlebars (I really like the OnOne Midge bars, but can't find them locally)
I also want to get a pop-top stem that rises a little bit.
I think this is going to be a straight sport tourer/gravel grinder.
I'd like to get the handlebars up a bit more.
right now, my handlebars are only 38cm wide and I'm a BIG guy... my LBS said I should have between a 44 and a 46cm bar.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The one problem with Retroshifts is that when you want to install new hoods, you need to replace the brake cable (and remove the brake levers)

Mine from 1989 --- like yours, this one originally belonged to my brother as well -- i had to rescue it from a life of neglect, rot and abuse (Actually its still in line for TLC )

Ended up getting an OnGuard Pitbull U-lock for it and it's mounted to the frame again. The weight of it over the rear wheel in my pack was noticeable...

700x35 WITH fenders is the absolute limit on this bike... and you really have to make sure the fenders are fit properly or you will rub.
thinking of going down to a 32... or getting another frame (if I can find something like a Bridgestone RB-T or Shogun 1500 or something...)

Still going, eh? I read through it and laughed as I saw you upgrading this, then that, then this. That's what makes it fun. I do have to ask, though. What's up with the barcon through the brake lever? You might like it just as much if you route it to the bar end.

That's the same bike? The original paint, was not only awesome, but looked to be in great shape. Why the repaint?? Also, you'll never see a teal like that again. If it's like the teal on the Ironman Master, it has a metal flake luster to it that sparkles in the sun. Am I misunderstanding things?

Hi! It might be hard to tell in that photo, but there was quite a bit of surface rust, nicks, etc. on the frame after 30 years. I wanted a steel frame for a rebuild, and after some guy actually gave me the bike for free on the street, it was the perfect candidate.

The result is a total rebuild, so the only original parts are only the frame and fork. It's a mid-level Tange frame with good lugs and dropouts, so it was *just* worth repainting. The original Sugino VP crank was completely corroded, and the front and rear derailleurs -- Shimano Light Action -- were functional but hardly worth saving. Hence, the fancy DA parts.

I'm a city rider, so flat bars were mandatory. It's a really cushy ride.

yep, same thing here. I'd love a new frame. my TCO on this is a lot. I can't turn in very aggressively in the city or I hit my foot. I'd like something with a bit longer and more comfortable

also, the paint on these is flat, not metal flake like the Ironman Master.

Best of luck finding a good touring frame for you! Just based on what you've done with this- I think you'll have a great direction of where you're going when you find the bike.

Just as a little bit of advice though... Just because it's a touring frame doesn't mean it won't have toe overlap.

That longer rear end seems to take a lot of the road vibration. I'd look at it like the difference between my Trek 400 and 620. Effectively same materials (531 and CrMo) but the 620 has like 5CM longer chainstays. Toe overlap is about the same. But then again, I ride 21" frames...

I do really like teal on a bike for some reason.

Also, I'm aware of the TCO thing, but this bike seems excessive. Almost like a racing bike. In the end, I would like a longer wheelbase, especially on the rear.

If its touring you seek, I would suggest, just based on my recent experiences, you're on the right track with the Japanese bikes but you should get a different frame. I'm not sure if it's been a fortuitous couple of experiences, or if it's truly the case that many Japanese bikes (not all) seem to sell for much less in general not having the Columbus/Reynolds stickers on them. I picked up a Miyata Two Ten for my wife that was in EXCELLENT condition, for $100. I later picked up a Miyata-made Univega Gran Tourismo in fair condition, for the same price. Both frames may be low-end, but they are touring frames and thusly, are designed to ride a certain way and accommodate all the accoutrements of the commuter/tourer. I will say, with the cheapo Wellgo MTB plastic toe clips on the Miyata Two Ten, my wife does see a bit of toe overlap. But as per the article above, that's not really a bad thing, and she hasn't found it to be an issue.

Either way though, your Centurion has come a ways since the beginning of this thread. I've enjoyed seeing the many changes you have made! And I too am a sucker for teal!
