Suntour Freewheel Interchangeability

I have a Suntour Perfect 14-24 6 speed freewheel on my Raleigh Grand Prix.
I put on a new chain and found out my 17T (#3) Cog is bad. It skips badly.
All the others are fine.
I am looking for a good 17t cog but am wondering if I can substitute one of the other
Suntour freewheels like The Winner etc?
Can anyone advise me on the interchangeability?
Thanks,
Chuck

If you are talking about completely replacing the FW, you certainly can do that, good opportunity to get a 7-speed in place of a 6 speed if your frame is already spaced 126mm and you want another gear.

If you are talking about replacing just the 17 cog with a cog from another FW, the perfect FW used threaded cog for 3rd positon, see chart;

Winner FW would use a threaded 17 cog in third postion that could interchange onto a perfect body. Beware however that most of the later suntour winner-pro went to using splined cogs for the middle 3 (of 7) cogs instead of threaded so are not useable on a perfect (threaded) body.

I recently put a NOS Suntour Winner freewheel on a bike with a NOS Sedis Sport chain, and it also skipped on the 17T. I replaced the chain with a new Shimano HG and now it is fine. Weird, and I cannot explain it.

Would the Winner fw have the same thread and screw on to my hub?
Thanks for the Info,
Chuck

HMMM. That's really interesting and strange.
Maybe I should try a different chain
Thanks,
Chuck

Your raleigh hub is most likely ISO/English thread. Any other English thread FW will interchange. Italian thread FW can also be used on English thread, same thread pitch just different thread shape so it is not a 100% technically perfect fit but works fine in practice. Just avoid french threaded FW. If you do go to a 7-speed FW, there is possibility that the chain may rub the frame in highest gear, you then just need to add or move a washer/spacer from the non-drive side over to the drive side to provide just enough clearance for the chain.

On a Perfect freewheel body only the two smallest cogs are threaded. The remaining 3 or 4 have splines. I probably have a 17T cog.

Below is a picture of the three different sized Perfect bodies. L-R: 6 Speed (regular spaced), 6 Speed (Ultra spaced), 5 speed.

In my experience no Winner cogs will fit on a Perfect body.

Right you are PB, I was aparently just looking at the winner chart, thinking the 5-speeds there shared same cog arrangement (wrong)!

The threaded winner cogs wont fit a perfect body but a corncob strait block suntour FW, like a 13-18 6-speed or a 12-18 7-speed will have a large spline 17t cog that should be useable in the 3rd cog position of a perfect freewheel body.

BTW- I am a fan of the 5-speed perfect freewheels, I have found that they make great conversions into a narrow 2-speed freewheel for use as a non-shifting double speed drivetrain. With a box of old suntour cogs, I can set them up for example as an 18/22 2-speed FW, then use together with a crankset fit with 38/42 chainrings to yield two alternative singlespeed gears that share same chain length. On a hub setup to 130mm OLD width, the narrow freewheel body allows for a very strong, nearly dish-less rear wheel (equal spoke tension L/R).

What a cool idea, now I know exactly what I'm going to do with my old 5 speed Perfect I got off a junked MTB. I've been looking for good reason to change my planned single speed Apollo project into a dinglespeed instead.

IIRC, somebody here on bikeforums.net has a SunTour cog board (sixtyfiver, maybe?) and might have the part you need.
