    Schwinn World Sport - 1986 - Decals

    Hi everyone - this is my first post. I hope you can help. I'm modernising a Schwinn World Sport 1986. I have the original parts (2 x chainrings, derailleurs, rear cassette (5 sprockets), brakes, "suicide" break levers) but not wheel rims, hubs, or saddle.

    Project

    I'm intending on converting it to a single speed by removing the large chain ring and then installing a flip-flop hub on the rear wheel - AND - hopefully putting some more modern break calipers onto it. I have other road bikes and just need a commuter bike to get to work.

    In addition, I'm then having the frame resprayed - as the frame is slightly rusty. This will be a black matte/gloss (TBD) - rather than the existing marine blue paint job.

    However, I need some decals to go with the bike once it is resprayed. I would like to have some decals like the original ones (Schwinn World Sport - 1986 model). If they hard to come be I could live with some more modern decals.

    Question
    Do you know a good & reputable supplier of Schwinn decals in the US? Or preferably in the UK? - I live in the UK now (but grew up in the US until early teens) hence why I have a Schwinn bike (they are not really sold over in the UK)

    (For interest - this is a project of mine to develop a better understanding of bike repair/refurb but more importantly this bike was my dad's and I have good memories of going for bike rides with him when I was growing up).

    I was going to say velo cals but noticed they don't list any.

    Yeah, apparently the company that owns the Schwinn name put the kybosh on that. Because all those good, well crafted bicycles from the day of yore were dragging the company name down into the mud.

    This isn't one of those bicycles.
    I completely understand the OP's desire to "restore" a bike that has sentimental value, but let's not get silly and start pretending its a bike that would be worth re-spraying if it wasn't for the history between it and the OP. Even then... respraying a 25 year old World Sport? I wouldn't spend more than the cost of a couple of rattle cans.

    The point is Pacific or whoever owns the Schwinn name has apparently put the 'cease and desist' on Velocals making ANY Schwinn decals.

    Velocals makes NO Schwinn decals. You made NO point addressing that. Any validity in your initial post glosses over that. My post was solely based on the concept of the current ownership of the Schwinn name putting the cease and desist on Velocals making Schwinn decals for ANY Schwinn bicycle.

    The thread is entitled: "Schwinn World Sport - Decals" which may lead those without reading comprehension problems to believe the thread would be about decals. There is also a bolded portion that says:

    Question
    Do you know a good & reputable supplier of Schwinn decals in the US?

    Which may again lead one to believe the thread would be about decals.

    I am not "butthurt" in any sort of manner- however insulted by your rudeness and lack of respect.

    An interesting discussion... I agree the Schwinn World Sport may not be the best frame going but as I said before I am using it as a project to learn more about bike repair / bike refurb. Plus I'm using this bike as a winter commuter bike to travel the 1.5 mile commute to work rather than using one of the more expensive bikes that I have in the garage - I'm definitely not using the bike I used to do the Lands End to John O'groats bike ride (the length of the UK).

    I think I'm resigning myself to picking the next best option of getting decals off Ebay.

    The 1986 World Sport isn't a bad bike. It's more than likely made by Giant, lugged, 4130 cromoly steel with decent, middle of the road components. People have done complete period correct restorations on lesser, much lesser bikes.

    I was looking for decals for my 1986 Voyageur, and they just magically disappeared- shortly thereafter I started seeing threads about Pacific Cycles sending out: "immediately cease and desist from any and all further production, distribution, and sale of decal sets which in any way infringe on Pacific Cycle trademarks."

    If you can find 'em on Ebay, snap 'em up.

    I rebuilt a similar era World Sport and agree with Golden Boy about being a decent bike. Mine was lugged 4130 and made by Giant. It was a great smooth ride although I eventually had to concede that mine was a size too big to be perfect.

    Anyways, I converted mine to 700c wheels with 35mm pasela tourguards. Nashbar's long reach calipers worked great, looked great, and were inexpensive. I clamped on a set of downtube shifters and used the stock derailleurs and crankset. I also added new levers, bar, tape, and stem. It really was an outstanding do everything around town bike.

    If you can't tell, I miss that bike and should pick up something similar, in the right size this time!

    I'm converting mine into a single speed using a flip-flop - 32-hole hub and using the existing small chain ring. I have removed the large chain ring. I'm modernising the bike and making it more convenient for my commute as there are no hills en route to work.

    Paint job - I've decided to us a local paint shop who will sand blast the frame and then repainting black in gloss finish (I'm told slightly glossy matte finish). The frame is in relatively good condition so I am not anticipating on doing any structural work as there are no dents and only small areas of rust. Guess rust damage will be further assessed during sandblasting.

    Wheels & tyres - I am using Mavic CXP-22 rims with either Continental Gatorskins/Hardshell tyres as I have these spare from a previous bike (700c).

    Brakes - I'm upgrading the brake calipers not sure to go with but bike shop and I have measured bolts required so probably go with a Campag/Shimano caliper as there some good end of summer deals at the moment over in the UK.

    Brake levers - probably just keeping with existing ones as I think they look pretty cool

    Stem & Bar - keeping the existing ones

    Bar tape - probably go with leather brown or perhaps dark red bar tape

    Saddle - I have a spare black saddle so will probably use that. I'm replacing the old seat post with a longer one.

    Drop outs - I'm not changing the drop outs as sounds like an avoidable expense / nice to have.

    I have retained all the original chain rings, rear cassette, derailleur, shifters and brake calipers. The old rims and hubs have been disposed of.

    Just an update. The Schwinn frame has now been resprayed and been converted into a single speed bike. The Schwinn World Sport decals, for the black frame, have been found on Ebay and have been ordered and should be fixed onto the bike at the end of the month.

    Wheels - 700c Mavic CXP-22s
    Brake calipers - Tektra R556 - nutted bolt - long reach. I could not use Shimano brake calipers due to recessed bolt.
    Pedals - existing Shimano SPDs
    Bottom bracket - not currently a sealed unit - I understand this may be an issue for single speed but will only replace when I need to.

    The actual frame being restored & converted into a single speed was actually a Schwinn World (High-Ten steel) vs the Schwinn World Sport (ChromAlloy).... and was the 1987 version. (so in essence the frame is pretending to be something it isnt... anyhow....)

    See the current state of the project. Will post final pictures once I get the decals and the new Schwalb Laguna tyres (blue black) onto the bike.

    I have all the original parts - all in working order - SunTour parts derailleur, chain rings, shifters, cassette etc should someone want them (?) or if I want to convert back.

    It was once a Schwinn World but I have now had it sandblasted and repainted black. I have used Schwinn World Sport Decals from the better Schwinn World model which were obtained from bicyclebones.com – these were hard to come by but eBay and hours of searching the net paid dividends. So the bike is really now pretending to be something it isn’t – a better model. At least it now looks better, has a bit more steet cred and has no rust on it!

    The brakes needed to be nutted instead of recessed nutted brakes as the holes in the frame only allowed nutted brake calipers. The handlebars were replaced with 44cm ones as the original ones felt too narrow (36cm). An A-head adjustable stem was used to give more flexibility in the drive height of the bike which required the quill stem to be replaced with a quill stem/a-head convertor. The suicide brake levers were replaced with old Shimano Dura-Ace brakes calipers – combined with the new brake calipers the brakes now perform better. Shimano Deore triple crankset – hollowtech – was used for its 48teeth chainring – smaller chainrings were removed and the chain line was aligned level to the rear hub. Rear hub is a flip-flop Acor hub with a fixed cog and bmx flywheel. The bike is typically ridden singlespeed to allow more flexibility whilst navigating traffic laden roads.

    Very nice conversion. You must be tall. I have the Voyageur in a 25" Frame and use about a fistful of seatpost at 6'4".
