Bob Jackson seatpost binder bolt

Am I missing something here? What is wrong with the bolt that's installed other than a little surface rust? Take it off and clean it up and paint it black or silver and be done with it. Just my opinion.

The photo of the bike at the top of the page isn't mine. I've been trying to track down the correct binder bolt for a frame I recently bought.

Yeccchh!.. that knurled bolt and nut affair sure looks fugly, Never-the-less, if the OP sees threads on one clamp ear and a countersink on the other clamp ear on his bike for an allen bolt head, then a flush bolt is what was on the bike. Could be a running change by the builder....definitely, for the good, IMO....

I'm sure it will hold, as long as the threads are OK on the clamp ear....Heck!, I prefer that setup on your bike so much more to the goofy Jamb bolt style one I have on my 1984 Peugeot PSV! (Also with a fastback style rear cluster)....... And even that one had been holding up my butt on the bike since I bought it in 84, so I can't see any problem with yours, as long as you adjust/tighten the clamp appropriately.....

Go to a hardware store and get a 1/4"-20tpi, a 1/4"-28tpi and whatever M6 bolts they have. Get them all in the the ballpark of the length you need. Go longer if the unthreaded portion of the bolt is short enough. Cutting bolts is easy.
It'll cost like $4 for all of these in stainless.

how are you going to plan to build it up peter?
I'm glad it went to someone that's going to really enjoy it. I may have another frame you might be interested in

Hey Andrew, the serial # points to right around 1970. As you know it must have gone back to the factory at some point and had shifter and bottle cage boss's brazed on, then the rechrome and repaint. I'm not even going to attempt period correct components but will modernize, I have a Campagnolo Victory crank and mechs, probably Modolo brakes and a beautiful brand new Giles Berthoud saddle to use on it. BB and crank are on it allready and the chainline looks good. Very slight BB distortion as was common with early Bob Jacksons but nothing to worry about. Dunno if I can afford another frame right now .

I went to my local hardware store today with a bolt that I took out of my Jackson tandem. As I already wrote earlier, it is not Metric. It is likewise not SAE.

Mehhh....this missing allen head bolt should still be much easier to find than say........the bearing tipped, seat post grub (jamb) bolt used for mid 80's Vitus frames... talk about proprietary parts!... 10mm coarse threading to boot!

Baxter Cycle in Marne, Iowa is your source for British threading; I've purchased a couple sets of Viscount crank bolts from them. https://https://www.baxtercycle.com/

I sent an email to Hilary Stone too, figure if anyone will have the correct bolt he will. If not i'll just use a 1/4 inch stainless steel carriage bolt. 1/4 inch will be thin enough to pass through the threading without actually engaging the threads then just a stainless acorn nut and lock washer on the other side.
Thanks everyone for your help with this.

If all else fails, you may want to give Stone's Cyclery in Alameda, CA a call. They are a licensed Bob Jackson dealer. I'd be surprised if they couldn't get a replacement binder bolt for you--either from their supply or by going through Bob Jackson.
Stone's Cyclery - Alameda, CA | Yelp
(I gave the yelp page since their main website appears to be down at the moment, but I was just there a couple weeks ago and they were very much in business. They had perhaps ten or so Bob Jackson's for sale, including a lovely junior frameset for 24" wheels. It would be a real loss if they went out of business!)
