Quill pedals vs pista?

So i am considering pedals for my road bike. Looking between Campagnolo SL strada (quill style) and the Campagnolo Pista SL pedals. I know the pista pedals are lighter and lack the outer cage but is there any difference in actual use? Any reason not to use the pista pedals on my road bike?

We use to cut off the outer cage just to say we have better corner clearance or simple buy a set of track pedals. I have them both for a long time, and can't tell the difference. The cleat and the strap stops everything from moving.

I can't see how anyone can use quill pedals, but I have duck feet. The quill jabs the middle of my foot.

+1 (for each foot).

I see no reason not to give a pair of pista pedals a go on your road bike. I've got Suntour Sprint/Cyclone track pedals on three bikes; I like 'em just fine.

Track pedals are shorter in width than quills.

I'm with Tom and Mike....quill hits my foot unless I am riding with very narrow cycling shoes. Just put a set of Sylan touring pedals on mine - wider than Pista (and heavier) but I like them a lot.

So really no difference in feel when riding? Considering the clips hold my shoe in one place. They would simply be lighter and theoretically have more cornering clearance.

Would the quill push the toe strap out a bit, so that the strap contacts your foot a bit differently ?

Got wide feet? Pista is probably the best way to go.

I'm thinking campagnolo pista SL. I appreciate the input! Now however my curiosity peaks. What is the out cage and the little point it comes to for?

Also slightly off topic. Are there safety issues with campagnolo super record titanium spindle pedals? A local cyclist has some Ti campys as well as the SL. Not that much more expensive. Thoughts?

The early, hollow TI BB spindles had some issues (Laurent Fignon famously broke one - and slammed his tender region on the top tube as a result - during the TDF), but I've never heard of a Campy TI pedal spindle breaking.

On Campagnolo pedals only the cage makes the strada pedals wider, the bodies are the same.
Remember, Eddy used Pista pedals on the road, so that is what any self respecting Southern California Junior racer did in the 70's.
So, Eddy endorses Pista for Strada.

Superleggero. All of the road bikes attributed to him show steel shafts.

Makes sense to me. If anyone was liable to put down power to kill those a good bet would be Eddy.

On the quill pedal cage? It's to prevent your foot from sliding sideways. That it's not a serious problem is evident in its absence on track pedals.

Seems kinda silly. Doesn't the toe strap keep your foot pretty well stationary?

Maybe a quill pedal gives you a bit more security, especially over a 200 km stage race when temperature and rain can loosen things up and fatigue could make a rider careless. Also, many pista riders use double straps.

I've got size 11 feet and have no issues with Campy SL pedals. edit...not that I've been anywhere near a century ride for over 5 years now.

Those are the most beautiful pedals ever produced! I had a set of Campagnolo Record C pista pedals and could not bring myself to install. I bought them on Ebay for $275 and decided to sell them and got $475 without the box. Siting in my parts bin did not make sense and occasionally taking them out to look at was just like holding hundred dollar bills in the palm of my hands.

A friend of mine was selling a shimano 600 equipped bike a few years back, that turned out to have a set of these. I managed to trade them out for a set of 600 pedals before he sold the bike. I rode them for a year before I realized how much they were worth. In good used condition I think mine sold on ebay in the $350 range. Interesting though, I don't recall these pedals being exceptionally light.

I neglected to mentioned that I picked up a pair of Campagnolo Croce D'aune pista pedals at the Madison Brazing bike swap, which I like better for $125. As always with Campy, the parts go up along with Global Economy and take a dip as world economy slips. But, still has more value before the upswing even at depressed prices. I have a complete Record C group on my Gios, and I agree the parts are not for weight weenies.
