C&V FD suggestions for a triple? Must handle Campagnolo Racing T (22t difference).

Hey all, I just snatched up a Campagnolo Racing T triple crankset. The rings are 52-42-30t (22t difference), and I need to find a compatible triple FD (28.6mm, bottom-pull). I'm converting from Shimano Custom cranks on a standard double (52-40t), and an old school Dura Ace FD that will also be up for sale after the conversion .

I was told that MTB FDs won't handle the big ring too well. When I asked my LBS about what to search for on eBay, they mentioned SunTour Cyclone and told me to check and see what Campagnolo FD would have gone in a group with the Racing T, naturally. But the Cyclone has variations that are confusing me and, after a quick search of VeloBase, I'm not finding any Campy info on any Racing T group. I don't even see the Racing T crankset listed on there.

I am not super picky, but if I could choose, I'd like to stick with something not so heavy since I'm already adding some weight with the granny ring. Any recommendations?

My bike:

Racing T had a matching long cage RD and wide plate FD in the Campagnolo record series, as opposed to Competition T which had matching derailers in lower end gruppo's like veloce, centaur and daytona.

I've used a few Racing T's, and I've found that nearly any Campagnolo triple derailleur will work VERY well, either shifted with an Ergopower or with a friction lever. Some are marked Racing T, and some are not. The designs are not all the same, either, but I'm not sure it matters. Mrs. Road Fan's bike came with a Mirage which worked perfectly with Campy and non-Campy triples. My Italian stallion uses a Veloce triple front mech with a Record triple, and shifts just as well. None of them are all-steel boat anchors, so don't over-fret the weights.

Quite a few have been listed on ebay lately. I search for "Campagnolo triple front derailleur" rather than "Campagnolo Racing T." If there is anything Racing T, it'll show up.

BTW, Racing T was not a top-line "gruppo." "Record" was and remains a designator for Campy's best road gear.

You're also finding that VeloBase is not complete. It's just a fact.

So the larger message is that any Campy triple FD will work, and any long-cage RD will work.

Has anyone tried SunTour Cyclone derailleurs on a triple with a 22t difference?

And Azorch, you are suggesting Athena derailleurs here?

I’m only showing that Campagnolo literature from the early 90’s states, “The Athena group may be furnished with a triple crankset which should be used in conjunction with the Centaur front derailleur and Centaur long cage rear derailleur. This combination will transform the Athena group into an ideal touring group.”

OP, just make sure which Cyclone derailleurs you get, & you'll be set, even on looks. You'll see what I mean, when you research them, even just here at BF. What you want, is the Cyclone Mk (Mark) II GT (long cage) in the rear, and the FD will come with an endless band clamp, if it's an "original". There were later issues, with clamps and braze-on mounts, which should work fine, but the "real deal" uses that endless clamp.

I'm using a Campagnolo racing Triple front derailleur with a Suntour 52. 42, & 30 triple. It has been flawless. I'm using an 8-speed chain with no issues.

I use Campy Racing T front derailleurs on three bikes and Suntour XC Pro FD on the other one (all 8-spd). All have 22-24T ranges between small and big rings. The Racing T shifts bit quicker (fewer Ergo clicks), mostly because it requires less cable pull than the Suntour. I think the inner cage plate on the Suntour has more of a bow. All are beautiful, well-made and long-lasting FD's, and the Suntour outer cage plate is a perfect match for the 46-48T rings I prefer. The Racing T is obviously designed for a bigger outer ring, but that doesn't seem to matter.

The biggest difference in front shifting is that the TA version of ramps and pins on the middle and big rings of one bike seem to work fabulously well. BTW, I use N-Gear Jump Stops on all these bikes so that the FD inner limit can be set to really throw the chain onto the granny ring without risk of dropping it off the inside.

My 2000 Bianchi Veloce has a triple with a Racing T in the rear and a Daytona up front. There is nothing on the FD to indicate it is especially for a triple. I do know my bike does NOT have the wider bottom bracket spindle intended for a triple setup. When I bought the bike, they moved the triple components from a yellow frame to a Celeste one for me. Everything has always worked great. I only found out about the two widths of spindles when I needed to replace the BB after 12 years of use.

It's not exactly C&V, but I use a Centaur FD with the Campy Comp Triple (53-42-30), and it works perfectly (10-s 12-32 IRD cassette with Comp Triple long cage RD).

Just snagged this for a best offer of $35 + free expedited shipping.

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...L:COSI:US:1123

I spent way too many hours over-thinking it. I was so worried I'd buy the wrong thing that I ended up using plenty of good brain power I could have saved for thinking of ways to make more money... in which case I could have just bought the Racing T FD auction that just ended at $151, haha. But I think I did good.

Now to wait for a nice Cyclone GT Mark II RD...
