2) the cassette you've pictured in post #13 is a Uniglide cassette, and requires that threaded top cog to work. The good news (IMO!) is that you can easily replace the freehub body with a 7-speed Hyperglide body (~$20) next time you repack the wheel bearings, and then you'll be able to choose from a wide variety of 7-speed HG cassettes ($12-30, depending on gearing and finish.) They shift better, too.

Jack of all trades
- i like your first photo in post 11 with the black saddle. it's simple and elegant.
- i always use gum wall 23c paselas. (colored tires make me sad.)
- black levers work with your black rims (and maybe even a black stem).
- i did the honey/rivendell thing on my first moto and got over it. (it's like the flu.)
- if that seatpost is super long, cut it down.
- a sunrace silver colored ramped freewheel is around $16.

This one! Add Jagwire frosty pearl white housings to tie in the decals and install the silver levers, you're done!,,,,BD

if you really like the honey look, you could wrap all the frame tubes in twine and then shellac it!

Those old ads are nice to have! I have scoured them trying to determine my bikes age. I'm still not totally sure but somehow I landed on 1982, which is conveniently my birth year.
By the way I bought some 600 Ultegra calipers.

Personally.........I'm a fan of the blacked out look. If it were mine I'd try a black saddle to match up with the wrap, tires and cables. With the lettering and crank finish I wouldn't go over the top with the black though. I know you have a black saddle in the original pic but a black Brooks could have better impact IMO

Sounds like I need to save my pennies for another Brooks... I should get the frame outlined so I can play with frame colors.
Here's the black with Vittoria Open Corsas, silver levers and white cables. It doesn't look much like the Le Champion above.

^ silver rails on the brooks always look a little smarter than the standard black ones. i never spring for the extra bling on my builds, with one exception: copper rivets on the saddle of my grand record. it's badäss.
i buy my b17s new on ebay for under $90. i like them in the box so i know they're new. sometimes i can find one for $70 or so, but that's in the off-season.
my b17 special cost $110, which was a bargain. silver rails (not copper) would look nice on your bike.

The one on the bike now is a honey Team Pro, silver rails. I got it for $78. It is heavy... I'd sure love a Ti Swallow.

I measured the stem today, it is 110mm. Should I go for an 90mm or search for an 80mm? I see 22.2 and 26 printed on the stem so I think sizing is pretty standard.

I have been looking at these catalogs for years, not knowing which model this thing is. The previous owner told me it's a Jubile Sport from the early 80's, but the more I look at these catalogs, the more I think it is a 1979 Grand Record. But then again, even the 1979 says it has brazed on cable stays, which mine does not.
I tried putting the 6400 brakes on tonight, and quickly learned about recessed vs. traditional mounting. Yikes.

Install the front brake on the back using the old nut and install the rear on the front with the reassessed nut inside the steerer. I've done it twice. Seems to work fine.

If I were to look for another frame where do I even start? I'm at the point where I want to rebuild this over the winter. Do I get a new frame and make this one a single speed? Or fix this one up like new?
Here's the '82 Jubile Sport. Came in Gun Metal Gray also, Vitus 888 tubing (I have a sticker on my fork with this indicated). 27" wheels though, and 700C fit just fine on my frame, without long reach calipers. And still no brazed on cable guides.

You complain about the fit - remember that these bikes are supposed to fit on the drops, not the hoods. You have to lean over more, and then it's less of a reach.

I wouldn't call it complaining. Just a comment, that I'm not sure I have the fit set up right. I did some reading, and it seems like a 90 mm stem might be too twitchy. The bike is already very responsive. I am definitely more comfortable in the drops, except for my neck.
I managed to get the 600 calipers on. The spring doesn't draw the rear lever back very well on its own, what can be done there?
Swapping front and back worked! The fork has the proper recessed mounting hole, though, so I'll drill out the back and get it set up right later.
