Takara 3 speed cruising bike

Posted elsewhere but probably best suited to this subject topic...

Hi all. Thought I'd try to get some information on the vintage Takara 3 speed bike. I'm not sure if the term cruiser applies to it. It has fenders and regular handlebars. It has the Shimano 3 speed internal hub gearing. I recall having a bike with the same gearing in my younger days. I can't find any information on this gearing system. I vaguely recall that you had to stop peddling or peddle backwards to change gears. Is this the case? Also can someone explain how to make sure it is in the correct gear i.e. which number should appear in the little display opening window if and when adjusting the cable.
