recommendations for peugeot rebuild.

Hi guys,

I purchased an old peugeot aubisque the other day. It probably wouldn't make a great racer but I was just going to use it for recreational endurance stuff. The bike does need some work - new bar tape, new breaks, new cables etc etc but the most immediate replacement is a new wheel set (back wheel is bent and spokes are lose). I was planning on rebuilding the whole bike with modern components, but in regards to the new wheels, I didn't want to go over board with hecktic wheels on a vintage frame - so can anyone suggest a brand of wheels which are relatively modern and available on online marketplaces but would be well suited to my bike? Thanks guys.

I shoild ask first if they're 700c or 27," I'll speak for 700c. Some of the take off/stock stuff would work great. I see sets all the time from people who just bought and upgraded their bikes. I'd also look into the mid2000s Shimano wheelsets, ie the 550.

Well for this just about any nicer set of 27inch or 700c's clincher allow's will work. You will need to buy to buy some tires and a freeweel/cassette to match whatever you get. If you plan on bluilding up with all modern you should go with a nice 8plus cassette type 700c wheelset. They will be a tough fit spacing on the rear but will work. You can get new ones from about $90 up and nice used set for $40 up that often have tube tires and cassette/ freewheel. If you want to stay basically vintage correct you can get a set of wheels for under $100 new.

The shimano 550s wheel set is the sort of style I'm going for, for sure. But I tendnto not really like shimano products so are there any products that's are similar out there that aren't made by shimano? Also, going on what zukahn was saying - say I wanted to run campy veloces, would I need to get a specific wheel set to cater for that?

You would need a Campy freewheel for the Campy cogs, otherwise your shifting won't line up. Also, check sets from Bontrager wheels.

Pretty much Campy hub's cassette's are specific spacing which are only work good with Campy DR's and Shifters .
