My idea is to go with modern 10-speed Ergo except with a classic C-Record crank for vintage looks.

Are you committed to Ergo-type shifting, or open to an earlier DT shifter group that might be more period correct? Have a practically NOS first-year issue (89?) Athena groupset including wheels, 7 speed double, complete and very nice. If that floats your boat.

A c-record crank, monoplanar brakes and an aero seatpost is a great way to backdate a 10spd group.

Oh absolutely - threaded headset and classic 7 stem will give it the vintage look!

I like the road we're on, though I have to admit, and I know this will get me ostracized, that silver skeleton brakes are, to me, the most attractive brake ever made (and probably the best functioning to boot). I do ideologically pure bikes at times, but my favorite to ride and own are usually the weird mish mosh bikes...those express more personality somehow.

I sort of did this kind of bike with my Marnati - the approach was classic bits where modern doesn't really offer much advantage, and modern stuff where it counts (drive train). I like how that one ended up.

I think the next frame I get is going to have some weird mix like:

Mavic starfish crank
silver skeletons
9sp ergo, silver levers
aero post
OMAS headset, if I can find one
Chris King campy hubs
grammo stem/cinelli bars
SPDs
Velocity Dyads

That would be one funky looking, odd ball bride of Frankenstein.

I'm with you a-Aron. I think most of my favorite builds have been mixed groups.

The mix is actually a really good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I really like Merckx pantographed stuff and have found lots of parts like that. How compatible is older and newer Campy stuff?

What he said ^^
Mixing it up is not a bad thing. Go with what works the best on what you have.

I've taken his/gomango's/bigbossman/etc's advice and now am convinced.
I picked up 2 sets of NIB 10-sp Centaur shifters for $150/each, other stuff used.

Now, the rundown, on what's moving miles on my bikes:

1-used Centaur century grey (from BF FS thread) with Ritchey compact crankset
1-used Centaur polished w/the NIB shifters.
1-used Centaur polished w/the NIB shifters, FSA calipers/Profile Design crankset (below)
1-used Record Carbon 10 group running KCNC calipers and Pulzion crankset
1-NIB Veloce full group from ribble for under $500 at the time, incl chain/cables.
1-used Centaur polished set, low mileage, traded for an Ultegra 6700 group, latest version.
(the trade was too good to pass up, and freed up a 9-sp Ultegra group for a (gasp!) steel Trek.

This Eddy's not as orange as it looks (Auto-Correct does that sometimes in Photo Editor).
However, you get an idea for the mix. I have no problem using different cranksets/calipers.

Mavic's components were nice , thye factory is outsideof the French language part of Belgium.

but Mr Merckx was, as a rider, using Campag stuff , back in the day .

IDK what the sponsorship deals were back then .. the DeRosa made Hour bike was painted with Windsor on it
for the time trial, at the Mexico City velodrome,
because the then Mexican bike company had a paid naming deal .
for the Logo to be there.

I believe that was Colnago, not De Rosa.

There is a lot of flexibility. The top bike has mixed parts from 8spd through 10spd and veloce to record and it shifts every bit as good as the full record bike below it.

there are a lot of if/thens in mixing Campagnolo so it is hard to give you much detail without knowing your plan. Here is the very basic: you can not use a vintage friction era rear derailleur with indexed shifters. Beyond that, I would need more direction or I would have to write a book to cover all scenarios.

Well 3rd I wish I could tell you. At first I set out to buy a Merckx. I wanted a steel bike as a heavy training bike. Once I started looking I found quite a few, but VERY few that I considered to be really nice and worth the money. (I know, very subjective) I have a few that have been offered by private sellers that are very much worth the money and they are on the top of my current list. Then I thought that maybe the best route to get what I want was to do my own build. That in itself has turned into a whole other trip! Not only is it tough to find a frame I like in the size I need, then the whole components/build list has gotten long and complex. Now I'm not sure what to do. A pathetic commentary on my state of mind. Or what was once a state of mind, now rapidly devolving into pond scum. I'm stuck. But I would buy the book if you wrote it!

It is cheapest to buy a complete bike but you sound like me, picky. If you want to continue this journey, it may work best to find a frame that fits your criteria and then slowly devise a plan of attack.

what component group is on your current bike? Another thing that should me mentioned to someone in your state (modern bike owner) is that 11spd cog spacing is near identical across brands. If you have or plan to put 11spd on the supersix, I would go 11spd Athena on this bike. It will be simple to buy, and you could share wheelsets and cassettes. Not everyone agrees, but I think this is worth a lot. I've got several wheelsets with different size cassettes and tires that fit both my bike. It gives me a lot of flexibility.

campy NR or if you can afford/find it Super Record.

I actually dislike the brakes on mine, Currently I prefer the braking abilities and comfort of aero levers.
