Fender clearance woes...

Finished off my son's bike, only to notice a major gaffe when all was said and done. The toe clips overlap the front fender when the crank is pointed forward and the bike is turning. I never even thought of this while mounting the fenders...total noobie mistake!

I was surprised because this is a touring bike with (I thought) a longer wheelbase in part to provide toe clearance. Does the 21" frame size contribute to the problem?

It's ride-able without the clips, but we'd both rather have them on. My only thought is to shorten the fender, raising it above the 3 o'clock trouble spot. But, then, would the fender and mudflap even be effective in keeping water off your legs?

I suppose 165cm crank arms would help some, but I don't think it would be enough. I'll check that tomorow...

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Certain frame sizes combined with large foot size will always result in overlap. Your skills as a rider will increase, you will adjust, then voila, c'nest pas de problem.

edit nice looking build!

Yeah - the smaller frame sizes can be a surprising disappointment in this department - but as clubman said, you learn to adapt to it, the same way you learn to remember to flick yourself out of clipless pedals. I built an early 531 Trek up for my honey many moons ago, and she adapted to the overlap immediately.
Even now, you can read in the fine print of some builders that certain sizes may have overlap.

Looks great. And that is a pretty small frame, which doesn't help matters. Shorter crank arms would help (a little).

Don't pedal around the sharper corners.

IME, toeclip overlap is one of the most over-rated "hazards" in cycling, along with pedal strike. Over the years, I've ridden several bikes with significant overlap, and can recall one (!) incident where there was actual interference between the shoe and fender. Just pay attention to what you're doing and it won't be a problem.

The only corners where I've had a problem with interference between foot and front wheel/fender are ones that you have to take at walking speed or less. "Sharper" indeed!

I've added a pic to illustrate the overlap...

It's great to know that this is not a huge deal.
I'll throw the toe clips back on and tell my son to be careful!

Can't really tell from the photo, do you have the clip slid out as far as it can go? Looks like you might only need to worry about the inboard part of the clip, the outboard one looks like it would clear.

If you find the toe clips chewing up the fenders, you might try some toe clip leathers as shown ...... it might help.

NICE bike by the way!

The over lap looks so slight, under ridding situations it looks like there'd be no interference. And if you did have a strike, the stay and fender would just move aside. This looks to be a very minor problem.

If you son complains....just tell him he shouldn't be pedaling through corners anyway!
