Well, I have a pair of 48/36 110 chainrings sat here, the Miche (apparently) has a 116 BCD, so a bit of Dremel action is in order! The existing Miche crankset could yet be pushed back into service, in keeping with the parts bin / low budget mentality of this build, I think!

ah, 116 bcd. If you decide to skip the dremeling and buy new chainrings, look for the miche young series, it's still in 116 bcd and several online vendors have it. The same as old school Triomphe and Victory (found out the hard way recently ).

116, isn't that the same then, as that one version of Campagnolo Gran Sport? I think it was the "late" version of G.S., which kinda mutated into that Victory & Triomphe line-up. I wouldn't actually know that, except I found out, when I got a G.S. crankset awhile back.

Thanks, I´ll keep an eye out online for it.

More good news - after 30 minutes of wet & dry sanding, we have a seatpost. Proof that 26.3mm into (rusty) 26.2mm does go, if one is persitant enough.

Yes, quite right. I believe the chainring
design with the straight legs (if you know what I mean) debuted in the GS series as well.

Well, she's grotty no more!

Great clean-up on this old Bot. Those colors will really pop when you add the bar tape, saddle and tires. I'm thinking white bar tape, white saddle and definitely some tan wall tires and she'll be killer...

Progress has been fairly swift.

The original BB came out easily enough, and has been cleaned & repacked. It spins smoothly enough so will be pressed back into use - budget build mentality rules!

The Miche crankset has been stripped down too, the arms sprayed a glossy black (the anodizing was too far gone), the big ring (52) has been cleaned up as well as I can and a Shimano 36 inner ring has been Dremelled into 116 BCD. Once the paint dries I´ll clearcoat the crankset & reassemble.

The Miche pedals have been stripped down and cleaned, ideally I´d repack the bearings but they seemed to be a sealed unit so I´ll just use them until they break. They came up OK. The leather straps are on their way out but I´ll probably just repaint them white and use until they snap.

The original handlebar has been chopped into a bullbar, the ends Dremelled out and a pair of Tektro brake levers installed. I had a 130mm 3TTT stem sat here not doing much so that´s going on.

The LBS checked the rear alignment and it was fine so nothing needs doing/bending back into shape.

I also bought a rather nice Tange headset from the LBS, he threw in cables, housing and fashioned the missing seatpost bolt for me for free, so that´s done.

Next purchase will be the chrome fork, I might have to go retail for this as there aren´t many about with a steerer tube long enough second-hand. I might get lucky on eBay but I´m not optimistic for this one.

In other news, I got a nice ride in on the Olmo - found a sloe bush absolutely dripping with berries, picked 5lbs and made 8 litres of sloe gin, so a good day all round!

Sloe gin!

Good to hear there are no bungled threads and stuff like that.

Whoever assembled the bike in ´87 did a cracking job, everything so far has come straight out with plenty of assembly grease still on threads etc. Always nice when that happens.

A saddle has been sourced:

Cumulative spend so far is €47, including a tip for the LBS. I hope to keep this build under €100.

Pictures to follow in daylight.

I mocked up a quick photo of what the crankset will look like:

Just need to spray some clear, and it´ll be done. The final gearing will be 52/36, so ´semi-compact´.

I had the spraycans on hand, so no expenditure really.

Original photo for reference:

It's cleaning up nicely, good work.

Those pedals look like they we're cut from an aluminum screen door. Never seen anything like that before.

The Miche pedals are weird looking but reasonably serviceable, so are almost certainly staying around. The toe clips & ancillaries are getting an acid bath this week which will hopefully bring them back to their former glory.

The Miche crankset has a very nice satin finish, now the clearcoat has dried, I'm delighted with it.

The quest for an affordable (i.e. ridiculously cheap) chrome fork continues...

Some minor progress.

A fork has been purchased (new, chrome, €22) and is on its way.

The drivetrain is nearly done, just need to cable the mechs. The chain is on.

The Miche pedals have been cleaned up as best I can and are definitely going back on.

I´ve glued new tubulars on an 8-speed Campagnolo wheelset I had from a previous build, and cleaned up the hub and rims.

No sign of the saddle yet

I still need to get a decent 26.2mm seatpost as the one I sanded down is a bit too short, and some white bar tape.

What a great thread! Looking forward to seeing it build up. Bringing a pile of dirt and rust back to life makes one feel almighty (or just useful, which is pretty cool as well).

So you sprayed the crankset? Well done, it looks brand new! I'm guessing you glued the monolithic stickers back on. Also with glueing new tubulars on a campy wheelset, you probably went over your estimate €100 budget, or do you have a tubular source that we should know about?

Cheers Don

Where'd you get that fork, auction or retail?

I taped over the monolith stickers with blue making tape & then sprayed, worked well.

The fork was an eBay €1 start auction, finishing at an odd time.

Oh, and I might have 'upgraded' the tubing used by the application of an, ahem, Columbus decal that, cough, I might have had lying around not doing very much.....

Tubulars: one was €10, the other was €16 a few months later, both at Decathlon!

thanks all for the kind words & encouragement!!!

Rejoice, we now have (nearly) all the bits.

The only snag is that the headtube is a bit longer than other steel bikes I have owned - great for my back, not so great for my home-made headset press as the bolt is too short

So it´ll not be put together today, as all the ´Home Depot´ equivalent places are shut.

The cheap saddle is excellent and matches the colours of the frame well.

I´m hoping to snare a zero-offset BBB seatpost this week on the bay, as I do like a slightly steeper seat angle than the norm, and they come up very rarely.

Apologies for the crappy pics, I´m in a bit of a rush....as usual.

Built, rode, liked, needed more space for a CX build, sold to a happy student for a low price:

I trust the Monolithic parts were the main draw?

Great build! Hope the young man digs it!

Student and vendor both happy.
i think my low price was the main draw, you've got to support higher education as best you can.
