1988 Tommaso - Columbus SL, Shimano Santé

My latest bicycle and first Italian [sounding] ride, a Tommaso. Seller claimed it to be from 1988 and the only other examples I could see online are quite similar. Has a full Shimano Santé 5000 group other than hubs which are Shimano 600 tricolor. I purchased it, tore it apart and rebuilt it. Ok, the seat isn't perfectly level. I swear it was before I took the pictures! Other than the seat issue and maybe moving the brake levers down a bit, this bike came off the stand and was completely solid and tight. Everything hums together well and has a great ride to it. The saddle needs to be replaced or re-upholstered. The rear Rolls plate is riveted in and the side San Marco emblems are bolted in with an expanding bolt tip so re-upholstering might be more of a challenge than I'm up for.

Columbus SL 61cm c-c seattube frame
Shimano Santé headset
Shimano Santé bottom bracket
Shimano Santé crankset
Shimano Santé 7 speed rear derailleur
Shimano Santé front derailleur
Shimano Santé downtube shifters
Shimano Santé aero brake levers
Shimano Santé caliper brakes
Ambrosio bar
Ambrosio stem
MEC gel padded perforated bar wrap
Continental Ultra 700c x 23 tires
Araya Superhard CTL-370 rims
Shimano 600 Tricolor hubs
7 speed freewheel (probably 600 but it is super quiet)
SR Laprade fluted 27.2 seatpost
And of course more pantographing than you can shake a stick at
All new cables, grease, tubes and Shimano SLR white housing.

Wow. That frame is just what they had in mind when they designed the Santé gruppo, I'm sure. I like.

Thanks. I think the white group looks right at home on this bike and I'd be loathe to separate the two.

I don't remember ever seeing a perforated version of the Rolls saddle before...... It could be quite rare and very expensive to replace. Hopefully, you can still be able to restore it.

Very nice Tommaso...I currently have one in my "stable"...and have had two others...love them! They are one of the best riding bikes I have ever been on...and I plan to keep the one I have as long as it keeps me!

Very nice! Sante works very well and is "period correct"

Did Bilato make these as a house brand for TSD?

Looks like a very nice frame! I'm not a fan of the white sante stuff, so I'll leave it at that.

I still have (and use) a pair of Tommaso shorts from around this time. They were in good enough shape that I had the pad replaced with one from aerotechdesigns. I'd like to find out more about the company.

I have not been able to find a perforated version of it either. What trade person would be the one to bring the saddle to? I thought maybe a cobbler but I've never done it before.

Thanks for the comments. Tommaso was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Denver, Colorado but this particular example was imported to Florida by Ten Speed Imports.

Great color combo, looks like a really nice rider. There's just something about a bike in my size that makes it more desirable

I think I can live with it but would prefer if it were 1-2cm shorter. Ah well.

I'm looking for a replacement saddle. What do you think of a black brooks B17? It is either that or a white non-perforated rolls replacement. I'm undecided how the black might go.

I have a perforated white Rolls in much better condition than yours.

PM me if interested or send an e-mail to rccardr@cox.net

After much ado, I have decided to pass this bicycle on. Primarly, I just couldn't get the fit dialed down for me. The seat tube height is fine but I find myself stretching uncomfortably down the top tube and always grabbing the portion of the bar closest to me and not the hoods. Almost all my cycling consists of commuting on relatively rough MUPs and shared roads with a lot of vehicles. The downtube shifting just isn't exactly conducive to dodging traffic with significant elevation changes on busy roads and the poor road conditions where I am really beat up the 23c tires. The bicycle really shines with twitchy handling and smooth as butter sailing on the quieter, flat and smoother roads that I sometimes come across but unfortunately that just isn't the bulk of it.
