Well thats a deal.
Interesting cultural phenomenon. "Bicycling" and bicycling was so different back in the 70's. Today its about fitness and competitiveness. Back in the day it was more of a recreational, hobbyist pursuit. I really can't relate to anything in Bicycling magazine today.

Definitely it has evolved. I was introduced to it at the public library, I rarely bought an issue when I was 11, I was saving up for a road bike and every dollar counted. The technical articles from the time mostly written by Fred De Long were interesting to a young lad. And if I trusted mail-order more I would have purchased one of the "Powercam" brakes advertised in a small advert in the back, the basic design showed up again in the Campagnolo Delta brake.
The reports of the National and International racing would be months old by the time the magazines went out. But the ads were great for all kinds of interesting gadgets and low priced mail order parts. At the time a pair of Campy Record hubs would run you $60-70. I ordered a pair of small flange(the latest "in" thing) Campy hubs for $40 from some place in Florida. They were delivered 6 weeks later!
I remember an article about a kid who made panniers out of 5gal. gas cans. A lot of articles on making bags and clothing. Taping bars with different materials for padding. Lots of "how to" articles that most contemporary cyclists would laugh or scoff at.
And articles on touring and recreational cycling were dominant. Along with general maintenance and bike fitting instruction. Stuff that now days people pay a lot of money for. Different world though, different times.
But those two magazines kind of educated me on all things cycling.

They started appearing in my mailbox a few years ago. I didn't realize where it had come from, and I called them (the magazine subscription service) and it turned out I had got a free subscription from Nashbar. It was pretty appalling; the articles seemed to be advertisements for bike gear I had no interest in, while the actual advertisements were mostly for SUV's. I probably exaggerate, but I really was disgusted by the thing. I asked them to stop sending me the magazine and then called up Nashbar and asked them to please not do that again.

Glad I had a chance to get that off of my chest.

The Drive Side is Within
I think they do a good job. Magazines have always been a little about product placement and softball reviews, but it's an entertaining read to paw through every month. Relax, folks.
The magazine can't be about the riding all the time-- it's hard to write about riding without sounding corny. If you want the riding, go and ride. If you want to read about gear that you may never own or touch, read a magazine. It's not a cycling replacement dosage patch.

Man you guys are crotchety. Sheesh.
You got a FREE subscription and you couldn't enjoy one article in the whole thing? Or enjoy looking at the pictures? Or enjoy anything at all for a free cycling mag? Sheesh again.

I can't help but thinking that any of us in here don't exactly fit "Bicycling's" target audience demographic...and haven't for some 20 years or so!

Man I hate saying this but, "back in the 60's", my brother subscribed to this mag, Sporting Cyclist.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/7-1961-VINTA...item3f2680e0ae
This dude on ebay has about a dozen for sale. Great articles about the English Club scene and from The Continent as well. Awesome ads, great pics, and of course now very vintage-y bikes. I'm thinkin of picking up a couple. If others bought some we could share. Any interest?
