It has a nice groupset, Suntour blue. But, the cassette is a 5 speed, I would like a 6. I think the wheel is from a Schwinn. It has a schwinn reflector. It also does not match, front being a Rigida (correct) and the rear being a Weinmann (incorrect). Someone got a trade?

This is good, someone rattlecanned near the bike giving a nice coat of overspray. It took me longer with a clay bar to get rid of the overspray than it did to take the bike apart. Does anyone know how to remove the surface rust caused by the groupset clamps?

Removing the bottom bracket, is there a sealed bearing style replacement? This would be nice, I rather dislike packing bearings. 1.37x24T, 68mm??

Does anyone have a new water bottle holder, or one not missing the top plastic piece shown above?

Looking for a new rear Rigida rear wheel, or used. Maybe someone can guide me to a 27x1.25 wheelset with sealed bearings? Something that will work on this bike?

Nice bike well worth fixing up. I think there is a good chance that neither wheel is original the rear is definetly a lesser replacement. Your best bet is to try and find a nicer matching set of vintage wheels it is usually cheaper to buy wheels as matched set and they often come with freewheel/casstte and tires for not much more than trying to find an exact match ofr one wheel. Since Treks from the 80's came with a variety of wheels and most no longer have the original wheelset a different set of nice vintage wheels won't hurt the value or collectiablility much. The folowing is a great site for everything Trek from there early 80's golden years.

but the San Fran Bike Kitchen in SOMA is a pretty good place to look
for stuff like you're talking about.

Personally, when I do one of these at this point, I usually just scare up
a couple of crank bolts like these and forget the crank caps entirely.

You really are better off using the loose bearing BB and spindle if it's
still in good shape. It usually turns out to be of better quality than
all but the higher end BB sealed cartridges, and you can replace the
loose balls for a buck or two.

If you are genuinely set on replacing everything with sealed bearings, I
think maybe you will soon grow weary of the C+V world, but I suppose it's
a matter of taste.

+1 on loose ball stuff if your willing to do a little more work on setup. They will properly setup out perform the majority of sealed stuff at half the cost or less.

On my '80s Treks the first thing I update are the wheels, I put modern rims with the drop center profile, much easier to mount tires or fix a flat. And use 7 spd free wheels or cassettes.

I don't know if that is the correct term(drop center) car rims are called that.

I just had a shimano octalink bottom bracket put in my '83 Trek 520 at the shop. I'm building it up with some old/modern 105 9 speed.

The bottom bracket is the most standard sized out there. English threaded BB's should fit it. Why not try to use the current BB? Yours looks to be in pretty clean condition...

Yes - the original bottom bracket will be exactly the right size for the crank. :) If it's in good shape, it's best to reuse it. I am working on an '8- 414 as we speak. Nice frames.

Thanks all for the great info!!! I will keep this updated as I build this thing. I may have found some good wheels with Suntour freewheel.

So I feel like a little girl with a new barbie. I happened to come across some 27" wheels on craigslist. Old G40 Mavic's with Campy Record Hubs 14 gage spokes and a suntour 13-32 5 speed freewheel. OMG everything I wanted for christmas. It's funny how close the set matches my 5500.

I feel super lucky. The guys father in law even worked at my workplace in the '40's and handed me off some history from the 60's. What a great afternoon.

....congratulations. I tell people all the time on here that the SF Bay Area
is a C+V high end junkie's wet dream, because of the combination of good,
long, riding season weather and high personal incomes. I bought a set almost
identical off CL a couple of years ago from a guy over near Petaluma.

Run a quick check on your spoke tensions, clean and repack the hubs and
you are halfway home on your project.:thumb:

i have an 82 412 i built up last winter, i used all shimano 600 arabesque, i have a ukai front wheel and alex rear, currently have a set of rigida 700c that i have to build up, i love the bike, she is my pride and joy

SImplex freewheel? That has got to be worth some coin! I think I have one of those steel SR dustcaps also if the other doesn't work out. I ask $5 to cover the $3 shipping cost, paypal fees and cost of a padded envelope.

THose looks like the matching shimano 600 arabesque calipers to the drivetrain, with a more modern lever.

If the tires aren't too dry rotted, you'll like them. They were one of the best tires of the day.

Is the Simplex freewheel worth something? I hadn't looked it up yet, the hub bearing was toast and it had a reflector from a schwinn in it. I would assume the wheel came off and old schwinn? Not sure.

Yes the Freewheel may be worth something if it's in good condition spins and catches smoothley and the cogs aren't in rough shape. Pull it of the wheel and clean it up and you should be able to get $25+ or so for it on Ebay not big bucks but way more than it is actually worth. The wheels and freewheel you picked up are a score and completely suited nice match for and vintage correct for the bike.

thanks, i need an updated picture, the new bartape really sets it off in my view, i rebuilt it with all shimano 600 arabesque except the levers which are just shimano 600 aero levers, the bottle holder was original and came with frame,

Dumb question, since I am unfamiliar with 27" wheels, if I get any brakes (i.e. 600) will they fit on a bike with 27" wheels? Is there something I should look for in brakes that fits 27" wheels?

Do a Google search for the term "bicycle brake reach." It should tell you all you need to know.

Reach is the distance from the center of your brake mounting bolt to the position of the pads,
which are variable to some extent, but not infinitely so. The pads need to grab the rim, which
is in a different place for a larger 27 wheel than for a 700c.

So brakes come in different reach sizes, and are described as such when sold new.

hmmm, what is my reach? How do I know what reach brakes have, since ebay fools don't list it.
