Hub Week...

There were 4, not pictures, that were thrown out. The Mavic's are not a matching pair but the rear is a SSC...

More or less yes. For 90% of my work I use Mobil 1 for everything. It has good consistency, not too thin, not too thick and the cost is reasonable, I paid ~$14 for that tub at Pep Boys. I can be a big cynic, for some reason I think Mobil has done a lot more R&D than someone else who's relabeling grease.

The other 10% get Shimano Dura Ace grease which is by far the best cycling grease I've ever used and I've used everything.....

For instance, 1 pair of the high flange were cut out of tubulars, the pair along with a small flange rear were in a lot of parts I bought. The Mavic came from a lot of 10 wheels I picked up awhile back. Half were probably laced to tubular rims. Of the 4 I threw out one was an Italian threaded rear someone threaded an englich freewheel onto, 2 fronts were built as radials and had distorted flanges and there a rear with chipped flange. those 4 hubs were stripped of the axles, dust caps, center clips and races.

Surprisingly there're only 2 complete pairs of hubs.....

Thanks! Stupid me, I interpreted your first phrase to mean you threw all these out plus 4 more and I was just besides myself with doubt! Just couldn't figure out what to be doubtful about! LOL

Nice set of skewers! Have you run into the Mavic ones that came with the Hubs? one of the differences between the 500 and 501 was the skewer material and shape.

Seriously, i'd be so panicked about interchanging parts accidentally... I'm a one hub at a time kinda guy...

In other news, I bought some Lucas X-tra Heavy Duty Grease online. $8/lb. I'm 99% sure (no, wait, just 60% sure) that it is exactly the same stuff as the Park Polylube. Same color, same consistency, same stink. A buddy of mine swears by the Mobil stuff; for hubs, I think most any grease'd do.

Nice selection of hubs, would you have a small flange Campagnolo Record front hub in 32h? Bearings or races don't matter, as long as the hub body is intact.

What a trove! Thanks for the pics.

BTW - can't find Mobil-1 grease here, or not that I know of. Wakos just rules the local market. I use a red grease that my pro-supplier here tells me is used for Japanese race car wheel bearings. (We do get Mobil-1 10-30 and 5-40 engine oil, which I am thinking of running in my Yamaha SRX sports moto.)

It wasn't to bad, the high flange are date coded '73 and '74 so they paired back up easily, all the fronts have slightly different axles so they paired up OK so that just left the single rears. And your right, most any grease will do, I try to stay away from wheel bearing specific grease just because its so heavy. I've only come across a few types I don't like...Phil Wood, SuperLube, neither impressed me and we use to buy those in bulk.

Should work just fine!!!

I'll take a look but I think the only 32H there has a matching rear.

I'm also not impressed with Phil Wood. Maybe it's the very high temperatures here. It bleeds out excessively.
I thought Park grease was satisfactory for its synthetic base and light viscosity. Used it while at the bike shop as a mechanic.

But recently, I overhauled a rear Miche hub after detecting vibration and found a damaged driveside cone scored around half its track. When I got the bike, I overhauled the hubs and found them perfectly smooth and packed with the old sticky white lithium grease used by Campy. Repacked both with Park grease and new grade 25 Wheel Master bearing balls. Only about 500 miles on them. I can't believe it was caused by the new grade 25 balls. And I've done enough hubs to believe it's not my work. The front hub is showing signs of roughness.
These Italian hubs ran smooth and probably unserviced since 1988. I should have left them alone.

I'm now using a red Supertech EP grease remarkably similar in consistency to Mobil-1. Thicker than the Park or Phil greases.

I used Phil Wood grease and oil extensively since the 80's and I thought their "waterproof" grease was good enough for most conditions I rode in........ but last year I finally decided to try a different grease in the form of Park's "Polylube" product, and man! Is that stuff so sticky and tenacious! It makes. PW grease look and feel utterly wimpy in comparison......It's like comparing watered down lite beer to a good hearty stout!.....plus the Park stuff is much cheaper too!

I use the same grease on bikes that I use at work on cars and trucks. Water proof wheel bearing grease, looks and feels just like dura ace grease. Not thick, flows great and is recommended for small or large bearing service. Never has let me down.

also a big fan of the Mavic hubs and the skewers, too. I also have a set of early Mavic hubs (they predate the 500 series, have a conventional shape with thin center barrel...extremely smooth running!) that have a distinctive skewer that's a bit more like a Campy: has some "textured ornateness" on the handle.
I'll take pix and post at some point...maybe on VeloBase.

Edit:
They are on Velobase...model 510, shots of the skewers there too.
I've never seen any others in pix or in person, but I love these hubs!

Just seen those photos on Leica Lad's post - incredible transformation! What did you polish them with? Mothers or Simichrome (or something else I haven't heard of)?

I have a professional buffing wheel with two buffing wheels. One for polishing, the other for bringing out the shine. Hubs were wet sanded with 1500 before buffing.

Ah! My neighbour has this set-up (he builds custom chopper motorcycles) and has offered me the use thereof. Methinks I'll remind him..............

Take the Pepsi challenge with the Lucas X-tra Heavy duty grease. Exact same stuff as Park Polylube, less than half the price.
