wrapped the bars with cork, twined the ends, and shellac'd ,came out nice, the chain stay protector came out great, almost to the finish line.. just need the decals.. and some new brake pads... anybody have suggestions on brake pads for weinman 750 centerpulls?

Diacompe grey matter is my first choice, i have them on my Raleigh Sports, and you get 4 in the bag,

koolstop continentals are nice too and are close to oem, anybody have thoughts?

The bike looks great, Gord. I've never heard of putting twine and shellac over a scratch or blemish, but it does add some accent and texture. I think that since you got through the bottom bracket issues, you will be able to do anything that comes your way on the build. I like how the beige and the silver components compliment eachother. I had a 1980 Grand Prix. It's a really nice ride!

Thanks pre, i typically don't worry too much about dings, but the markings were very obvious, and it took away from the bike, so i decided to make it a focal point.. use it as an oppurtunity to make the bike better i guess..

heres a pic in its semi finished glory, (excuse the background mess, the work area is always a nightmare during these builds) no decals yet, but its done


also i was able to convert the old dim light, i found out the bulb was too high of a wattage for the battery ,so instead of tracking down another correct bulb i decided to convert it to LED.. really easy btw..
i just used one of those 3 dollar flashlights from home depot, i took out the battery case, and wired the negative to the switch, and the positive to the terminal on the LED housing,

then i made a small hole on the LED housing and used a small screw to attach the ground from the case, a little soldering and some electrical tape to and it works like a charm...

everything is done, got the decals on friday. The raleigh downtube decals overlap onto the other decals on the other side.. kinda bummed about that one., Cyclomondo sent me the wrong decals, there website has 2 different decals with the same label, cyclomondo is sending me the correct ones.. .good on him! the decals do look nice tho.. i have 2 'made in england' and the raleigh heron headbadge,, and the classic raleigh Competition downtube decal, the wrong decal was this guy...


i just wanted the seat tube stripes ..


i have pics up once the correct ones arrive. im seriously considering re-doing the downtube decals.. not thrilled with them...

more or less finished, still not happy with decals, will probably redo them at some point.. found a few on ebay
i think im going to add this to the top tube

Very tastefully done, Gord! I like your selection of components and I think your twine and wax idea is brilliant, at least for this color frame. I think the Grand Prix decals for the top tube is a good idea. What kind of riding do you plan on doing with this bike? Be mindful of those decals since there is no clear coat on them. Your lamp video said it was "private", so I couldn't access it.

thanks again pre, the video should work now, thanks for catching that, i may clearcoat the decals going forward ,i haven't done it on other bikes ive done and they are ok so we will see, i plan on using this bike as a pub crawl, bike night kinda deal, every friday we have a bike ride with a local group here in rochester, this bike was built with that night in mind. i am currently working on adding a rack. I attached an old box to the rack and shellaced the box


i tested the box it fits 2 6packs of bottles very nicely, i also integrated an LED rear light that attached underneath the rack with a push button mounted near the front... not sure how this will look.. .but wanted to use this box in some fashion..

heres a pic with the box... its not level... and im not really happy with it, it may come off..

took it for her first shake down ride yesterday.. the weather was 52 degrees out.. but man do i hate riding in pants... the headset was a little loose, and front fender was rubbing a bit, but everything else felt great... the brakes are horrible.. really non existent stopping power, any suggestions? new pads are on order, but the centerpulls are not giving me anything

here is a shot of the light as well

Gord, I know this sounds obvious, but did you find out the source (location) of the lack of brake efficiency? I have never used those levers, but I imagine a good cleaning and lubrication of every part of the braking system would be in-order. If you've exhausted that option, then you might consider these: Cheap, Italian-made:Universal Super 68 Brakes Used | eBay

both sets of brakes were disassembled and cleaned, i waited to order pads because i wasn't sure on what to get, im starting to think it may be the levers... i don't feel like i get enough pull out of them, i really can't judge until i have new pads on there...

i want to stick with the centerpull brakes because its oem to the bike,

I don't know if you bought those levers used, Gord, but I think the brake levers are the hardest part of a bike to clean thoroughly, if they've been around for a while. If you haven't already, soak them overnight in something strong and work the levers back and forth every now and again, to release the gunk. I think you are right in staying with your present brakeset.

the levers are brand new, they were nos from the coop, got them with a set of bullhorns, they don't feel like they are compatible with brakes, like when you use single pivot levers with V-Brakes... mushy and no stopping power,, i can't figure out if i have the correct MA for them... any input ?

well the first step in fixing the brakes is getting new pads.. so i went with Dia-Compe gray matter, 4 pads for 15 bucks.. hell of deal, i already have a set on my sports which improved the braking dramatically.

ill let you know once they are installed how she feels...
