You've been here it seems. I swear, nearly every time I ride the Trail, there's a headwind heading out, and a headwind coming back.

A friend of mine who lives in the upper Connecticut River Valley, where that's also a common problem, told me that he always starts his rides by going with the wind. That way he's sure of having a tailwind at least part of the way.

Thank you Jim, she is a good motivator .. mostly diet and exercise but can still slap me on the nose when I'm a bad dog.

That's a good strategy, and a good argument for starting the Cape Cod Trail ride in Orleans instead of Dennis. Which I've done.
You can start out going either direction.

There are also hills, you just can't see them. They are all under 2%. But I swear, you can feel them, especially when the wind is blowing at 20+ mph.

W..i.....n.........d? What's that? My commute home today was brutal. Over 20mph, gusting up near 30, and maybe over, for all I know. All headwind. Had to use my low gears just to keep going forward. If I hadn't been running with the brakes on I might have started going backwards.

Re Sharon's arm there is good news and bad news. The good news is that she is out of the cast! First, the thumb was apparently not broken after all. They said for this kind of arm break the treatment is to start PT for range-of-motion but not to weight it. So the bad news is that she will not be biking. When Sharon asked the PT'ist responded "God, no!" Ah, Sharon got in the car and accidentally weighted it and jumped in pain. Point made. So I'll be making the CCRT run by myself.

It's usually not that bad, PG. The wind is manageable, usually. It's the rain we need to hope against.
April can be sketchy here, but we'll pray to the sun gods.

Ha! Wind? We don't call it wind unless we have to put three reefs in the mainsail. It's a breeze, just a light spring breeze!

No really, in April we usually get a sea breeze coming in from the east. So as we head from Dennis to Brewster it can be in your face a bit. But as we head north from Orleans to Wellfleet it will on our right. Plus it's pretty sheltered until you get up to the beach.

It's not the wind I'm worried about, it's the lead weights someone has tied to my ankles ..

We got half an inch and apparently a lot of ice. On my commute this morning I saw lots of disgruntled people attempting to chop the ice off their windshields. Of course I was gruntled because my bike doesn't have a windshield.

On the other hand, if Monday's ride home was brutal today's ride in was barbaric. Cold, strong headwind from the north, ice and snow on the road shoulders. I saw only two other bikes. However traffic was light (everybody was still trying to clear windshields) and people were courteous.

Yeah, we got it here today too. I work 4 PM to 2:30 AM, drove home in a snow squall last night. Rode last Saturday in shorts and a tee. New England huh, gotta love it!

Well, the best laid plans....

My 96 year old father in law, Army veteran of WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam, is not well and was recently placed in hospice care. I need to go visit him in GA. Since my church schedule can be a bit challenging to manage, I've decided I should go ASAP after Easter to bid my farewell. I'll be missing our spring CCRT Ride on April 26th.

I'll do the ride vicariously through your reports and pictures.

I was hoping to spring the idea of a nice 50+ mile gravel grinding ride here in NH on the Northern Rail Trail sometime in late September or early October. Basically it would be a ride from near the Connecticut River in Lebanon, NH to the Merrimack River in Boscawan, NH. This is a very scenic ride through woods, along fast flowing rivers, beside lakes, and through natural bogs. There are old factories, small villages, covered bridges, and other historic sights along the way. It probably does not see 5% of the traffic we see on the CCRT, so not crowded, and for many stretches we'd be all by ourselves.

We'd need to figure the car logistics and I can arrange very basic lodging at a church camp near the mid point for about $25 each per night. I've ridden it on 27 X 1&1/4 tires and would not recommend anything smaller. Vintage 3 speed IGH bikes would be a hoot to make the ride on, but not necessary. Talk it over and let me know.

Yeah, Bob, bummer that you can't make it. Sorry to hear about your FinL too. Have a safe trip.

Don't know about the gravel-grind trip. We have 32mm on the tandem so the width w.r.t. the gravel size would be okay. But it has to carry the weight of bofus. Plus, Sharon has never liked the little bit of dirt/had-packed sand/fine gravel we've ever done.

Very sorry to hear about your father-in-law, Bob. We are going through that with my mother-in-law, though it doesn't look like it will prevent us from riding on the 26th.

I sympathize with Sharon regarding riding over rough ground on the back of a tandem. The stoker has no way of anticipating the jolts because he/she can't see in front of the bike. This makes it kinda painful. It is why we don't own the Cannondale mountain tandem I could have grabbed for cheap last year.

Hey Bob, sorry about your father in law, I hope for the best, but realize from your post the importance of this trip. Take care, and you can count me in on a fall ride in New Hampshire.
