Raleigh Sports/700c brake caliper options...
I'm running into some serious problems with finding brakes that'll work on my Raleigh build.
To summarize: It's a Raleigh Sports frame that I'm using 700c rims with, and 700x37 Continental tires with. The tires are more like 35mm wide, rather than 37. The tires have a good amount of clearance on the frame, or so it seems to me.
Based on what Sheldon had to say on the matter (Tektro R556 were a good match), I got a pair of R559's (which superceded the R556). They cleared the tires just fine, both in height and width. However, the reach of them was too long...they were just barely short enough to use on the rear, but too long on the front to properly place the brake shoe on the rim.
I thought, okay, let's see what else is available. The Tektro R539's looked similar, but had a shorter reach in the range of what I needed. Got a pair, installed them, and found that they didn't clear the tires, both front and rear, and both height and width...totally unsuitable, since they were pressed against the tire at the top, and couldn't even be installed without letting air out of the tires. The reach was, however, perfect.
So, now I'm wondering what my options are. I'm eyeballing old Weinmann's and/or Dia-Compes, thought I'd like to stick with dual-pivot. They look like they have better clearance, but I honestly can't tell which ones would work, since I can't find any actual data or measurements of the old calipers.
Does anyone running 700's on a Raleigh Sports have any suggestions on some calipers that'll work?
