a quick dumb question
Im going to look at a bike circa 1984 - 1985 soon. It has friction shifters on down tube bosses. Will those bosses accept indexed shifters should i want to change to this in the future?

I'm certainly not an expert, but I would say Yes. Indexing appeared in 87 as I recall.
|
Yes; and they can also be used for cable stops if you want to go with brifters.
|
Not if the bike was originally equipped with Shimano shifters. From, I think 1982 till 1985 Shimano used proprietary shifter bosses. There are no index shifters compatible with those bosses and cable stops have to be modified.

+1 on Brian's post. If you went indexing, you'd have to alter the backing plates of the shifters to fit over the bosses.
Been there, done that, on a 1986 Cilo with SLX, had to take a file to the backing plates, then found some made for that kind of boss and indexing. |
