Went out for one project, came home with two!

I had placed a voluntary hold on acquiring any more bikes due to an economic change, but, as will surprise no one, I wasn't able to control myself when the temptation got too severe. I had paused all of my searches and was avoiding CL. I haven't been I to Via...I was really trying...

I went into CL to sell a bike, checked for it...and this was at the top of the page. I think my passion for East Coast builders is well known and Tom Kellogg is among the guys I most admire. What was I to do? Making matters worse, the seller is a former member who I've met and think highly of; I think those of us who knew him all miss Picchio Special's presence on the forum. He's a super friendly, super knowledgeable guy with great taste. He's also incredibly generous and, unasked, insisted I take a "bonus."

Neither will be built up until things stabilize, and I'm hoping that happens before I have to start getting rid of stuff. Without further ado...

Unexpected bonus - this belonged to Connie Carpenter-Phinney! 753, SBDU

Me too, but I don't think it will be for long...

Extraordinary, esp. the Kellogg. Don't think it needs much building...

The Raleigh has a pretty unique touch:

Just the normal stuff - cables, overhaul bearings, tape, some cleaning.

I remember Picchio Special as being very knowledgable here, sorry to hear he is out of the C&V. The Kellogg is a tremendous score. Good luck with it.

Did you get to see the Wizzard( why do I feel like I am in Oz when I type that)? Please tell me he measured it wrong and it is actually a 65cm.

I didn't, I think he shipped it. I did see his Masi, Grandis, Colnago and a few others. I especially love the Grandis.

As we discussed, this makes up for missing that Ross a couple of years back. Really, really a nice purchase.

It does! There are only three bikes I whiffed on that I really regret missing:

A Lotus Aero model
An Orange SL Umberto Marnati...

and, most of all, that AMAZING custom Ross.

This might be just as cool - maybe.

You know, normally a bike like Colleen Carpenter's SBDU, with drilled fork drops, would be an attention getter - but next to the Kellogg it fades a bit.

There was this incredible TK custom built Ross, Ishiwata 022, with a SR gruppo on the bay, my size, great paint job. I bid 1000, I was sniped and it sold for 1001. I kicked myself for...well, a while.

Picchio Special reports that it was among the first 753 imperials, and the last with drilled fork drops.

Honestly - I haven't decided yet, and I'm so far from taking that on that it seems very distant. I have a few ideas:

The frame is an 83'...seller thinks the team used AX, and that might be an interesting choice . The negative is AX is hard to find, overpriced, not especially attractive and I don't like the dyna thing.

Suntour Superbe could be a good choice - I don't really have a Suntour bike.

It seems too cool for parts bin, but it's an option.

I might go single speed fast commuter actually...with north roads. I've always wanted to try a goofy build like that. The frame is RIDICULOUSLY light.

Go goofy, Northroads would be fine. You can always change it up a couple of times too. There's time for serious efforts later. Main thing is you get to ride a serious performance bike. Take it by the coffee shops, maybe let the connection to it's previous owner slip out.

I'm sure you will be smiling while you pedal this.

You forgot modestly dysfunctional. The early DA/600 series were weak relative to their Suntour equivalents,
Suntour Superbe could be a good choice - I don't really have a Suntour bike.
^ like this.

The Wizard was my size, but I wasn't so interested. Any idea why Picchio Special is getting rid of bikes?

Yes, he's got some other priorities right now and down sized a few. He's still got some very nice rides (that Grandis is superb).

I should probably go with Campy, but I have a lot of it and want to do something different. I'm really liking the fast townie build.

I'd build the Palo Alto first. That's just me though.

I'm doing a major swoon over the TK though. That one has a direct connection for me, as my little brother has one as well.

Really a great rider and it's fun to just sit and gawk at the TK and his Redcay side by side.

Congrats on your good fortune. I would love to see PS stop by more often.

I would have tried for the Wizard if it were my size.

Just curious.... So, what size did Connie ride???
Is that something like a 57-58cm??
IIRC, she was one of the tallest women racers back then......

Me too - he's good people. I really like Redcay and Boston - it's amazing how many fantastic builders that period produced.

The Palo Alto has been on back burner for 2 years - I have almost all of the parts I want, I just have to build it up. The TK probably did just bump it.

TT measures 56 ctc, ST measures 55.5 ctc. The frame has the size listed at 57.5 (half size indicating custom).

I wouldn't have your patience to wait on the TK. I would have it stripped by morning for a top to bottom rebuild.

The only vintage I want more than a TK is a McLean.

Thanks! I have some tough choices - take a job like the one I lost, or have some tough times while aiming for some more credentials and increasing my long term value. The scared part of me (and that's a big part) is saying don't take chances, accept a decent offer. I think the smarter long term strategy involves some temporary sacrifice.
