Vintage Ride Patches

I was out in the back garage cleaning out the attic last week when I came upon some stuff my mother had saved for me. It was a box of childhood memories with things like class pictures, report cards, pictures, news clippings and other memorabilia. One thing I already posted in the 'All Things Fuji' thread was the receipt for my S-10S.

Anyway, also in that box of stuff were some of my Ride Patches from back in the day. I thought some of you might get a kick out of them.

Those are super-cool. Probably quite a rarity as well. Most of that kind of stuff doesn't survive.

I found this recently, stashed away with 1 mint Stronglight crank dust cap, some Weinmann wrenches, and other misc. bike stuff.
I think 1974 was the first Boul Mich. bike race. This is probably second year the race was run. Raleigh "emptied out" the warehouse for this race. Great prizes and drew guys from all over the country.

This is the only one I could find, although I'm sure there's more someplace around here. Including some old L.A.W. patches.

The "Great Dane" was a century ride in southwest Wisconsin. It's undated but must be from the mid to late 70s, since that's when I was living in Madison and before we had kids and couldn't easily participate in long rides. The building depicted on the patch is Frank Lloyd Wright's "Taliesin East," just outside of Spring Green, and past which the ride went.

The first 'organized' ride I did was the '81 one day STP. Rode down on Saturday, took the train back on Sunday. Back then there were 300 riders. Nowadays, they cap the ride at 10,000 and it fills up in advance. Not a pretty ride by any stretch of the imagination, it is a rite of passage here in the PNW...

Super cool patches! I rode the "Hilly Hundred" when I was a grad student at IU Bloomington 5 years ago. I don't have a patch though.

One of the older guys who came into the bike shop I used to work at had a red vest he wore sometimes with about 10 patches like these sewn on it. I don't remember what they were, but I know one was for riding a 200 mile endurance ride. I think another one was for doing the Narragansett Bay Wheelman "Flattest Century in the East."

That gentleman had a nice white Simonelli we used to service. He was still pretty active about 15-10 years ago when he was in his late 50s early 60s. Then he was involved in a bad accident which destroyed the Simonelli and shattered his pelvis. Last I heard (about 10 years ago) he was just finishing his rehab and was going to start riding again.

I rode it again in 2011 on the same bike, a Miyata 310. They didn't have patches for that one, though.

I'll have to poke around but I have a few generic patches put out by L.A.W. back in the '70s for a Halloween, St Patty's and some other holiday ride plus a Hanover Horse farm tour patch.
