Vintage Bike..........Computers?
Over the years I've built up quite a collection of these. I just spent the weekend removing a 70's vintage bike computer. It had 3 different sensors (front wheel, back wheel, and cranks). Are there any models of vintage computers worth hanging onto? Anyone still using a vintage model? The one I removed was the size of saltine cracker.
I'm still using a Mid-90s Avocet 25, but I don't consider it vintage.

70's vintage computer? I didn't think they had them at that time. The earliest digital computers I knew were the Avocet 10s and 20s.
I'd like to see that older one if you can post up pics.

Here is an ancient Cat Eye computer that I have. The disk mounts to the front wheel and it has a pickup that sits on top of that, I think it's pretty cool.

I had a Peugeot computer that I bought in the early 1980s, but I threw it out a couple years ago when the batteries leaked. The magnetic switch had failed long before, but I kept it around for the clock function. It was about as big as a pocket calculator and had as many buttons and would only update every 6 seconds.

I have an avocet 45 I still use on my road bikes.
I had an old Vetta C100 (I think 85-90ish?), but my son put it on his MTB and killed it crashing into a tree last month.

I've got an Avocet 20 on my Gitane TdF but am not using it. The it doesn't have a "power save" feature and is always on so I got tired of replacing the battery and resetting the thing more often than the others.
I've actually got to the point this year where I gave up tracking training miles and just go out and ride, often without a computer. I still train hard I just don't care so much about all the data.

Back in the 70s, Popular Mechanics had an article on building your own bike computer. Believe it was just a speedo and odometer. Their example was mounted in a repurposed tuna can.

The last "vintage" computer I came across was on a Cannondale touring bike I bought used. I put a new battery in it but it stayed dead. That kind of put me off trying to use old bike electronics.

I found an Avocet 20 in its original box about six months ago, and put a battery in it that is still going strong.
Really like the total simplicity of the 20, and it will register a lower speed than any of my newer computers, so I can get miles recorded when walking the bike up the 1.5 mile flint road to the pavement.
And Ive a box of those Huret axle mount odometers. Used one for a while, just to delicate to bang around, otherwise it was kind of neat.

Still have a Cateye Micro on my '86 Centurion Lemans RS. Only problem is, the band holding the crankset pickup for cadence broke, and I can't find a way to rig it back to function.

I want to get a mount for my Magellan GPS. I figure a backpack with the recharger and I can ride it on battery power for a while, then recharge it at someone else's place if I absolutely have to ? I figure the longest ride one way was 1 1/2 hours, double it, so 4-6 hours battery life actually covers the ride for the day. It's actually more like 45 minutes to 1 hour each way depending upon the bike type I choose to ride. Rain would suck though. Maybe even the sun if it made the screen difficult to view.
