Wow, looks great so far! Would love to know how much this ends up weighing complete.

Thanks I expect it to weigh just about 21 lbs right now based on the spreadsheet i've been keeping of the weights of the individual parts. I think with a modern 2 piece crankset and slightly skinnier tires I could get it under 20 pounds

Finally finished with this build [edit: a new build for 2016 is farther down the page] I think i need a stem with less reach but otherwise she's done for now. Weighs a little under 21.5 lbs

WOW! After seeing the final build I am of the opinion that any more blue anodizing would be too much, especially the seatpost. It looks perfect as is, very nicely done!

edit: Oh and the red on the saddle is awful. All black is the way to go! Oh and another thing that would be cool is that if that is the seatpost you're sticking with anodizing the silver clamp would look great. Not sure if that's possible though.

yeah the red saddle definitely doesn't belong, but I got it with the seat post and it's lighter than any other saddle I have, so until I get another one, it stays

So get another one
Btw Deda makes turquoise bartape. I think it won't look good but it's up to you of course.
Deda Handlebar Tape Sports & Leisure | ProBikeKit New Zealand

And I have a pair of turquoise bar end plugs from Lizardskin bar tape that looks like a decent match if you want them. But on my monitor at least turquoise looks a little too green for what you have on there already.

i may get one in the future but finding a comfortable saddle under 265g is going to be expensive. I've contemplated just dying the red part black.. that might be easier

and i'll shoot you a pm about those bar end plugs

All black tires will make colors pop more. Stem is not doing that bike justice either. Beautiful bike overall!

Using dirt drops with a threadless stem set up inevitably tends to be ugly :\ I actually would like less reach but similar rise.. I'm not sure what my options are though besides using one of those extension pieces with a shorter stem with less rise. Another option would be an LD stem made by Clockwork cycles.. I actually really would like this and am considering it, but they are $200 and custom made so first i have to *REALLY* be sure about the geometry of the stem

What are those anodized straddle cable hangers? I could use a set in purple for my Haro. More important than color, is the low profile. I need one that's narrow like yours for my rear brake to allow me to shift my water bottle cage an inch rearward.

frantik, the bike turned out beautiful and you did a great job of putting it together. Very tastefully done and what a great ride you have. Thanks for sharing the build.

Cool stuff, frantik. Lile seeing the build (almost) completed. Have you tried riding it with the stem flipped, just to see how it rides? I'm wondering just how bad a big saddle to bar drop is for actual spirited xc riding

They are Onza Chill Pills. A classic must for any 1990s MTB enthusiast. These are iconic. The Ringle Mojos are Iconic and sell for stupid money but I think they look chunky and silly. The chill pills take the cake for coolest hanger of all time.

^Thanks for the info on the Chill Pills...silly me, it was listed in frantik's specs!
They are sweet looking and I can see why they are an iconic era piece.

hah.. flipping that stem would mean some crazy saddle to bar drop.. I'd rather it be a little higher so no i haven't tried it flipped

Wow that looks great, those colors really match and make this bike look like a real business. I also prefer flat bar build over drop bar conversion for this one. And I'm super jealous ;P

Loved the first build but like this new one even more. Especially the tires and the photo in the grass.

I've got the same bike but a few years later (95 I believe) that has been doing duty as my sole mountain bike here. But I've really been jonesing to convert it to a single-speed, stripped down, commuter vehicle. Need to source the right fork and build a budget to buy a real mtb for here in CO.

thanks guys.. i dig the flatbar build a lot more myself.. i was never fully satisfied with the drop bar build, mostly due to that stem and the fact it was kinda a mishmash of eras and parts and even shades of blue. now everything is turquoise and much more period correct

Looks good. I have the original Manitou 3 on my '93 Axis TR, my favorite vintage fork it's so easy to service. Not feeling the green tires, though.

Some better ones here:
