Saw that beast a day or two ago. Whoa! Where the heck did they find a high-quality chrome tank large enough? Chrome is soooo tricky now (and was, even back then). Wow.

We have an '88 Santana tandem, but it probably cost less (new) than just the plating of that frame and fork!

I also am perplexed with the difference in prices between frames produced by a handful of big name European builders and their North American equivalents. Why Colnagos consistently sell for more than Eisentrauts is an uncomfortable mystery to me.

I agree with you that the treatment of the stay and blade ends on the bike in question is, to my eyes, somewhat awkward... but I do love the "gimmicky" paint job.

And no, I don't have the money to back up my convictions or I would be the proud owner of a Della Santa, an Eisentraut, a Bruce Gordon, a Peter Wiegel, a Merz, a Ritchey, a Kellogg, a Litton, a Peter Johnson, a Lippy... not to mention a dozen frames from the newer generation of builders.

I hear you. Those are all excellent marques. Sorry if I got overheated! Sometimes I can be a bit too passionate about this vintage bike stuff!

The issue of poverty-level pricing for American-built top-notch frames was an issue for decades. Just ask Albert! When Bike Warehouse (now Nashbar) sold Colnago Supers for $300, that forced most US builders to sell at that artificially-low price level. I think those days are finally gone, but it took about thirty or more years to happen!

Albert is one of the 'Dons' of American framebuilding, and is still under-appreciated, even now, most of the time, imo. It was a thankless career for decades and decades. I used to visit Mike Appel's shop frequently, in Madison, when I lived there, and he lived like a 'starving artist' to be sure.... His product was just amazing, but he could only sell it for so much, not for what it really was worth....

Also, now the auction closed, I see that there wasn't even one bid on the bike. Sad.

^ Oh man. I was going to ask my local coffee shop if they would go in halves with me on that tandem. I would find a couple old leather saddles for it. They could wheel it out in front of the coffee shop just to grab some attention from passersby. I'd just like to oogle it for a while. Maybe it will be relisted.

I was going to buy it, but it's one size too big for me (it's not the size listed in the ad) and my wife wasn't thrilled about the rusty seat lug being at her location. If you reach out to him, he mentioned a buy it now if someone was ready to purchase.

This is fun, except I hope bianchigirll's post was a joke. I almost puked. If it wasn't a joke, I apologize.
