No doubt. I think the A/C model names are all cool.....just maybe a little "too cool" in some cases (i.e., so cool I don't get some of them). Regardless, I can tell you the A/C models mentioned in this thread are a really good choice for new, affordable, steel frames, if that's what someone is looking for. Pics of the Space Horse online and in catalogs don't do it justice...it's much better in person.
Addionally, I have several friends that race CX for the Fulton Brewery/All City team and their Nature Boys are gorgeous.
Loads of personality for factory bikes.

I hope this does not move the thread off topic, but I think we have a pretty darn good community here in C&V. Some of us who have been around for a little while know who's opinions (or facts) to trust regarding different area's of the bicycle world. We know each other, if only a little bit. I think there is room here to move discussion outside of whatever defined criteria one has ascribed to. If not room for bicycles of every type, then at least there is room for all steel bicycles built in a classic style. That's my 2c.

Pedal to the medal
Plenty of vintage steel that can fit up to a 33 for around half what you're willing to go up to. Centerpull's have plenty of gusto. If you're building from scratch, maybe consider that also.
Otherwise, I vote for All City Nature boy. Nicely made front fork, can take very large tires, possibly even the Bruce Gordon ones, and not overly expensive.
Another random thought, maybe putting a LHT front fork on a 26 inch lugged mountain frame with 1 and an eighth head tube such as a trek 930-970. Enough room there for 650b, which gets you different tire choices for the road, or completely different wheelset/tire combos with quick brake adjustments, all on the cheap.
Not helping, am I?

I think the VO Pass Hunter is the best looking one, I'm partial to red frames.
The VO has 56mm trail, which is in the Rivendell range for good handling. Do you need a larger 700C tire than 32mm for your use? It does not sound like you do. Panaracer GravelKing tires max out at 28mm.

I would want at least a 32 to ride on gravel, 35 would be better. The VO will take up to 35 without fenders, so I am good there. The problem is if I want to do any other off road riding I can't go any larger. I'm still weighing all my options before pulling the trigger. It might just mean two new bikes (one custom) if I cull the valuable stuff from my herd that does not get ridden often.

I don't know if it will help you decide or not, but here is a really crummy picture of my VO Pass Hunter. It's a very nice riding bike. The longest ride I've had it on so far was a little shy of 50 miles, and it was comfortable the whole time. It's not light, however. With everything that's bolted on (before water, saddlebags, etc) it weighs just under 30 pounds.

The option for voting "new bikes are stupid" was intended to be tongue in cheek, and give people who did not have a horse in the race an option to vote and see the results. Some people here do not like new bikes, and that is fine. On the other hand, to honestly think that all new bikes are stupid (and I'm not accusing anyone here of honestly believing that) is insulting to most cyclists and is not helpful to the cycling community.

Sorry if this is a duplicate, could not scan 4 pages BUT if you have not considered the Soma double cross, it is a good value, and the frame is very light for 4130 CrMo. Soma now has a complete bike or you could check out some awesome builds at GVHbikes.com I was going to buy one for my daughter, but she wants a 30-06 with a good scope instead. Go figure

Yea they seem nice although I have only rode it on the street so far from the LBS. They look like they will fit under my Mud Butler Black Hammered fenders as well. Not sure if I want to put those on though.

What do you think of the disk brakes? I am thinking of building something with them just because I have never used them.

It is my first experience with Disc Brakes but I like them a lot. I had to Bed them in but after that they stopped great. They are Hayes CX-5s. Infinitely better then the sidepulls on my 80's Treks haha

A little off topic but I see the 89 Rockhopper listed. I have mine, bought new, sitting in the garage.

I picked mine up from the original owner about a year ago. It was purchased at the bike shop right up the road from my house. He touched up the frame using Interior home paint haha. It is my go to ride for the work commute though. I recently replaced the canti's with the Deore T610 V brakes. Nice upgrade, Especially the levers.

My frame has arrived!
Well, it arrived yesterday. I decided on the Passhunter because there aren't going to be many times when I need anything larger than a 35mm tire. Plus I really wanted the long top tube and low bottom bracket that this frame offers. I'm thinking it might just make my RB-1 obsolete as my long ride/century bike.
I got it mostly built up tonight, but the fit isn't quite there yet. Over the weekend I'm going to figure out the stem length and rise that I need to get everything just right. Plus I still need to order new handlebars and a wheelset. I'm probably going to go with the Soma Highway 1, as I have that on another bike and like it a lot.
Velocity A23's have a following, but I'm considering H Plus Son Archetypes. Does anyone have evidence why one of these may be better than the other? Velomine has what appear to me to be reasonable prices on both, but I'm assuming those are machine built wheels. Maybe I would be better of building my own.
I'll post pictures once I get a stem on that isn't dog butt ugly.
