Wearing a cap within the confines of a velodrome is definitely within the rules. Word of warning though: don't get involved in the purchase of said cap at the very time your points race is supposed to start. D'oh!!

And, at the risk of sounding even more ignorant than usual -- just what is "luft"? A combination of "lift" and "tuft"?

Luft was sort of coined in the original article linked in the OP. It was meant to be funny (I liked it) I think but was a descriptive word for having some airspace in the top of your cap and a little bit of rumple/crinkle. You know how in classic photos many cyclists in the 1970s had their podium caps sort of perched on the tops of their heads. That is what "wearing it with luft" means.. Luft is borrowed from german and means air, more or less.

And regarding your post above, there is a cycling cap in that photo.

Fuente liked lots of Luft apparently...

Own and wear a couple dozen cycling caps . . .
At age 81 I wear what I want, when I want.
Rules? I've broken most of 'em!

How did I miss this thread? Must've been doing something semi important. Unlike now. So I took some pics of my caps.
Kind of kicked myself for painting the house in my old one I bought in the 70's. It's seen some miles.
Can you wash these things without ruining the cardboard stiffener in the bill? Yeesh. Grungy.

But I've managed to find some more since then, Including the nice NOS orange one.
As you can tell, I'm fond of the old "3 stripe-ers". Though at 7 3/8, I find them small too.

newer ones are made with plastic instead of cardboard stiffener. you can wash by hand but i wouldn't use a machine since it could break the bill. Unfortunately I just broke ANOTHER bill tonight (2nd one).. bike caps are not very durable i have found :\ I've broken two bills and the elastic in another came undone. At least the elastic could be repaired. Broken bills are a bummer

Love the orange one. Dibs if you ever sell it.

Yes you can hand wash the caps and yes the cardboard brim can get wet. Clamp it between 2 pieces of wood, let it dry and it will be fine.

Thanks guys. That pale blue one may be beyond help. I had really noticed it before taking those pics but, it sports French colors in the ribbon.

Got that orange one to go with my Moto, Iab. But if I ever decide to pass it on, I'll P.M. you.
