Need recommendation for 27" wheel fenders

I am wanting to get a set of fenders (preferably chrome metal) for my trusty old 27" Schwinn LeTour. I need them for actual use (water deflection), not just appearance. Can anyone recommend a set? The lower the price, the better. I don't need anything real fancy. I'd take black painted if they are considerably cheaper.

Living where I do (Tacoma, WA) with lots of bike shops around, I might just have to shop around to find a decent used set.

Velo orange probably has the best selection but prices will range from $60 and up plus shipping. Planet Bike has black plastic ones that for very well for less then $30. I use the PB fenders with 27x1-1/4 gatorskins on my vintage tourer.

Maybe plastic would be fine.. but I have the mindset that metal is always better.

Are the sets you are talking about the ones they say for "up to size 700c x 28mm"?

There is a good discussion and purchasing examples shown here...
Bicycle Fenders (Mudguards) From Harris Cyclery

I like SKS CHROMOPLASTICS. Won't dent / ding or rust. Light weight. In my case, OE bike model type.

They come in a similar black version as well...

+1

I like both Planet Bike and SKS fenders, but the SKS chromoplastics really look great on classic bikes.

If you want silver, spring for the stainless Velo Orange fenders. The mounting hardware is a lot nicer than that on the plastic SKS ones. I've had a set on my old Campania for three years, used for commuting daily, and love them. They are about $60, but worth it, IMO.

Actually, they're $50 with free shipping on Amazon right now, about $10 more than the SKS, and around $8 more than the Planet Bike Cascadia ones. For that price...

I'm using the SKS P45 Longboards on my Le Tour. I put 700c rims on mine but 27" rims would work the same. I like the mudflap low to the ground up front.

Absolutely my choice, too. And probably big enough for 27x1 1/4 tires. Mine are covering 700 x28 with quite a bit of room to spare, and the Velo Orange store says they can go over 27" tires as well.

They are a little cheaper if you buy them on Amazon. They are generally more difficult to mount than plastic, but the mounting hardware kits is complete and very solid. My only problem getting them perfect was my brake bridge clearance, it kinda smushed down the fender line. That and I had to use my Dremel tool to cut down the sides a bit where you attach the end of the fender to bridge between the chain stays (it's a 'racing' bike). I don't think that will be a problem on a LeTour

Nah, they work fine with 27x1-1/4 tires, with plenty of room to spare:

If cheap metal fenders is what you want, you really can't go wrong with Wald lightweight fenders. Should cost less than $20 for the pair. They're nominally for 26" wheels but fitting them to 27" wheels is just a matter of fitting the right hardware.

^ Wow, that is pretty cheap. The front fender looks pretty short, though; that ain't gonna keep your feet dry through a Tacoma winter.

Having really good coverage without having to add a sloppy-looking mudflap was an important part of the deal for me. That and the fact that stainless still looks good after 5 years of wet weather riding made me pull the trigger on those Velo Orange fenders, even at the higher price.

^^ That is a good point. How much good you get from a pair of fenders is directly related to how long the front one is, especially at the back. Which reminds me to post the attached, measured and drawn from a real Bluemels mudguard flap.

If I have to invest $50 in a set, I will I guess. I make use of the buses a lot too though, so I'm not merely on foot and bike. I may hold off on the fenders since it's now entering the less rainy season and I don't have to rely on the bike as much as some might. If I find a good set for cheap, I'll try to snatch it up if I can though.

I just mounted the P45 SKS Chromoplastics with 27 x 1 1/4 tires. I think they look really swell.

If you're not in hurry you can browse Amazon from time to time and snag a set of SKS or something else decent for not too much moolah. I don't think I've paid over 25 bux shipped that way. Usually well under $20.
There's also the ISO/trade subforum on this site, this can be a great way to make local trades for relatively low value items like fenders.
