Raleigh Sports / Sturmey Archer front hub threading

I need to re tap the threads on the front axle of my 1974 Raleigh Sport. Can anyone tell me the correct threading / size of tap that I need to use.

Sharp looking bike JL. Ex-Hamilton neighbor here.

Are the threads stripped away? If so, no re-threading attempt will replace lost metal. It's new axle time or possibly use washers to regain a better thread position on the existing axle. Will a new un-worn nut help save the day, or is it still serviceable (the nut that is)?

26tpi raleigh proprietary... good luck on finding a tap. Usually the nuts will strip first. If you have to re-thread the closest is an M-5 but don't quote me on that.

Thanks for response, I will try a new nut first. Threads on axle are worn down, very hard to turn right side nut. Causing issues when I try to adjust left cone. anyone got a spare axle? Or know where to find one? Cheap?

Maxturbo,
are you still in the area?

Aaron, are you sure about that? I know it's 5/16" axle and probably 26tpi, but I don't think it's Raleigh proprietary. Front axle nuts on English bikes seem to me to be interchangeable, Raleigh and others. If so, then I think there are a lot of options on ebay.

Probably don't want to learn from my example, but I've had good luck simply replacing the axle and cones frankenstein style from my parts bin, I can't recall if I had to change bearing sizes though... this was a while back. I do know though I had to do some fine work on the fork dropouts to allow for the new axle size though.. which is why I can't reccommend this procedure.

The threads are Whitworth and you would use a die v.s. a tap for re threading an axel. They are not cheap but dies are available here: British Tools & Fasteners - BSW DIES

Maxturbo,

No. I left many moons ago, after growing up there and then joining the Navy. Numerous visits over the years to include Woodman's and The Clam Box though. YOU can relate.

There are some Phillips front axles on eBay right now that should fit, though you might have to use them with your existing cones.

I believe the 26tpi was unique to Raleigh. British standard was 24tpi. Maybe everyone was buying hubs from Raleigh?
