Picked this up today for a price that I just could not refuse. Looks like it has spent most of its life outside, and the paint is in VERY rough shape. I don't really know where to go from here. Part out? Clean and rebuild?

Prespray the BB cups, pedal threads, seat post, bottle holder bolts, and headset with PB Blaster. You can do a preliminary wipe down with Barkeepers Friend to see how the paint looks underneath. Then decide on a full repaint or not. At the least, you'll need to paint the fork. Break out the kiddie pool for an OA mineral bath to get most of the rust off the frame.

Done.

I will look for barkeepers friend at the store next time I go. This is FAR too tall of a bike for me, but hopefully I can build it for a friend. Might make a nice commuter that someone wouldn't be afraid to lock it up somewhere.

I feel confident that if the frame is just too far gone, I got my money's worth in brake levers alone

WHY would someone do that to a great bike ?

That looks like a candidate for total strip ,paint strip and repaint. Good luck !

I think Bill did this already, and the seatpost was quite stuck. In the end it became one of my first keepers

Surprise here, seatpost and stem came free with no drama in any way shape or form!. Now to tackle the rest of the components!

I have a Schwinn Voyageur like that. The frame wasn't rusted but it was scratched up like crazy. I ended up stripping it and repainting it, and it's now waiting for finishing touchup and clearcoat. (Long cold winter kept me from finishing). The most disappointing part is not being able to find replacement decals.

My winter project was my wife`s 1980 Voyageur. It was rusty and scratched up real bad. I was able to find the Voyageur 11.8 decal on ebay. I made the seat tube fork and chain stay stripes out of the paper used to wrap cars. It worked great.

I'm building this exact frameset for a friend of mine back in Portland, Or. He wants to know what brand your Wheelset is.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

If you are talking about the black Schwinn Voyageur, the Wheels are Wienmann Momentum, take offs from a modern Ralegh Carbon Fiber bike.

If you are talking about the Tempo, https://www.bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/...LL/1987_17.jpg
