If my math isn't too bad, it looks like we're at $320 out of $425.
Looking good!

If my count is right- we're at $400-
We need $25 more.
Jim said if shipping is more than $25, he will cover the amount over that.
I'll start drafting an email to Skip.
I'll post it here before I send it to him.

This is a draft of the email I'd like to send:
If there's anything anyone would like changed- let me know.
Dear Skip,
I’m writing you on behalf of a group of members from the Bike Forums “Classic & Vintage” subforum.
The Vintage Trek website has given countless people access to such a vast amount of useful information that many of us use on a weekly basis, some even more. The information that you have collected and compiled onto your website has been a bounty to hobbyists, enthusiasts and collectors of not only Trek bicycles, but many other bikes and components as well. As you have no advertising and no membership, Vintage Trek truly is a “noncommercial, just for fun, hobbyist site.” It would be incredibly difficult to express appreciation for the amount of work that you’ve put into the Vintage Trek website. However, we would like to try.
As we understand, you ride a 21” bicycle. As you have noted on the site, the Trek 720 is a bike that will be used and coveted by experienced tourists well into the future. As you mentioned to me in an email that you would like to “someday” get a Trek 720 touring bike. We would like that “someday” to be now.
One of our forum members has a very clean 21” 1985 Trek 720 touring frame, fork and headset. We have raised the funds to purchase this bike and send it to you as a token of our appreciation for the Vintage Trek website. We would like for you to accept this gift.
This is purely a token of thanks and gratitude from a group of members of the Classic & Vintage subforum. It is not a venture of Bike Forums ownership or administration.
If you would like to accept this, please let me know and we’ll make arrangements to have the bicycle shipped to you.
I sincerely thank you,

One of these days you're going to figure out that I'm not really Paul Hornung.
Just an ordinary guy who is a 2 time NFL MVP and 2 time All-Pro who held the single season scoring record for almost 50 years...
In addition to being the recipient of the 2006 Time Magazine "Person of The Year" award...

Looks like I'd better get a frame box! This is just awesome, what a great community!
Thanks for organizing this Golden Boy. When you sell a vintage bike you hope it will find a good home. Hard to imagine a better home than the man behind Vintage Trek.
Cheers,
Jim

Good news everyone! I heard from Skip around 15 minutes ago.
Here is his reply:
I'll be contacting everyone that has generously offered to donate by PM.
Thank you all for making this happen.
Here is his reply:
Hello David -
Incredible! I am deeply honored. What a generous gift from you and your fellow Forum members! Yes, I would love to have it.
The web site has been joy to put together. Something I did not expect, is the interaction with vintage Trek owners. Some just asking questions about their finds, and others kindheartedly offering information or materials for the site. It has been a wonderful collaboration of hundreds of like-interested bike people.
I have a vintage Mercian frame with cantis that I was planning to build up into a touring bike at some time in the distant future. A 720 would be a MUCH better starting point, and much closer to my heart. It would get top priority on my bike to do list.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Cheers,
Skip
