Hello All:
Thank you all so much for contributing to this purchase for Skip.
I dropped off the frameset a little while ago and sent him the message shown below. Thanks for helping me find the best home imaginable for this frameset and special thanks to The Golden Boy for all his work coordinating the whole thing.
Happy Riding,
Jim
Dear Skip:
The members of Bike Forums chipped in and bought you a 1984 Trek 720 frameset. It is now on its way to you via USPS. Tracking and insurance stub attached. It should arrive next weds. I insured it for $400 and (unfortunately) that will require a signature for delivery. I hope that doesn't cause any inconvenience.
I am thrilled that this Trek is going the best home possible and I hope you enjoy riding it!
As you'll see in the attached pics, I did my best to keep it safe during the trip. Please let me know if there are any issues when it gets there.
Best wishes,
Jim

I mention this only tentatively, but I noticed there were a few people who still wanted to contribute after we had reached the full amount -- another worthy and very useful website for people like us is VeloBase. I have used this site a lot, too, and have donated a few bucks out of gratitude.

Hold it. It's red. You didn't say it was red.
We gave a guy a red bike?
Boy, I thought we were giving him a baby-diaper green or tan Trek....
Remorse and Envy! Remorse and Envy!
Now he owes us GOOD pictures.

I've only been hanging out here on the C&V for 3-4 years and I don't know about the rest of you folks but this IS the coolest thing that I've seen/done here on this group! Thanks GB & Jim and to all you great folks on this forum. I LOVE this group!

Not that it matters but I previously owned this bike twice before.... and Jimbo did not profit from this sale When I saw it for sale again I nearly bought it back but was too late.
Nice that this bike has finally found home.
Good job to everyone involved.

The Trek 720 has arrived!
Hello Dave V. (The Golden Boy), JimboMartin and All of You Other Vintage-Trek.com Supporters -
The Trek 720 frameset arrived today.
WOW - IT IS MAGNIFICANT; better than the pictures portrayed! Even inside the bottom bracket shell there is no rust. The headbadge is near perfect. The paint has a great shine to it. The few existing touchups are well done and there are only a few more needed.
Thanks again for this generous gift. It also represents an honor to the many Trek aficionados who have helped gather info for the site. In addition, I have learned much from the many hundreds of folks who have emailed me with their questions.
I plan to build it up initially with some period-correct parts that I have on hand. For example, I have a TA pro 5 vis (Cyclotouriste) triple and probably will build up wheels using a pair of Campy Record hubs (6 speed). (Although - I do have a classy Maillard 700 front hub which might become the basis of the front wheel.) In my stuff somewhere I have a pair of SunTour bar ends and a Campy seatpost. Then, as I collect them, I will replace some parts with original spec’d ones. I may pass on the ubiquitous (but excellent quality, and perfectly functional) SR Laprade seatpost, using either a Campy Record or even a French-built Laprade. I may also pass on the Helicomatic 700 rear hub, but if I can find one, I will salt it away for future use.
Thanks one more time.
Cheers,
Skip Echert

BTW – the packaging JimboMartin did on the on the bike was, by far, the best that I have ever seen. It might even have survived the proverbial UPS forklift driver who stabs a bike box to pick it up. The USPS carrier that delivered the box knew it was a bike frame, but couldn’t understand how it could be so light. I told him it was because it is the best touring frame in the world.

I'm bumping this up, too!
Love Vintage Trek! The site really came in handy to help i.d. my bare rusty no-paint 420 frame and fork. Pics of the painted frame will be supplied when the project is completed (hopefully not too long). Stay tuned!
