In retrospect, that may have been part of his training regime. After the SUV meets golf club incident, his win record has been very different.

People take sports too seriously. I'm not talking about the athletes; they get paid a ton of money to compete. I'm talking about the fans who just watch people compete. I'm talking Congressional hearings on drug use in sports serious. It's all so silly.

I'm with himespau on this, the use of PED's was prolific in the peloton. Those who did not use probably for the most part where the guys in the middle or back of the pack. So, using them is really of no surprise, his team was the best there was at working the leaky system. It's LA's behavior to squash any and all efforts to get the truth out is amazing and is going to be very hard to recover from.

There must've been a handful of guys in the pro peloton during those years that didn't take PED's.
Those are the guys I would admire…if I could figure out who they were.

Yes I agree, it is admirable when people do the right thing when it is the norm to do the wrong thing. Especially when you are competing against the people who are cheating.

He pressured his compadres to lie, lied himself, and finally admitted it and was disgraced.
If he'd have spoken French and embraced France, the issue would never have come up.
He's also from Texas, and from the wrong political party to get the gloss-over by US media.
As a pro cyclist and a public figure, that's what the deal is, and I respect what he did.
His job required some of the things he did, and he was ruthless and dishonest about it, and I don't admire that.
I sure don't think I'm better than him as a person in any way, shape or form, and I'm in no position to judge.

He overcame a tremendous bout with cancer.
He has generated millions for that cause, both to research, treatment, and directly to victims.
He was a gracious behind-the-scenes host at a very good NAHBS, when he didn't have to be.
He moved and shook Shimano and Trek in ways we don't know about, but likely benefit from.
He often bought high-end collectible frames that we appreciate, because he appreciates them as well.
He's a dad, and acts like one. He's a human, and acts like one.

I'd love to have a beer with him, talk old bikes with him, talk cancer with him, talk kids with him, talk music with him.
I've heard he has a wicked sense of deadpan humor to go along with his tremendous discipline and work ethic.

Before he was famous, or doping, a guy named Merckx recognized him as the real thing.
I'd ride with him any day, and be happy about it. I'd wrench with him any day, and be happy about it.
He can work on my bike any time, and I'd definitely pay more to have him sign the ticket.

If I ever get the chance to just shake his hand and say "Thanks," I will. For everything.

+1, exactly. It's one thing to cheat. (If you're not cheating, you're not trying, right?) But to be an arrogant, vindictive, a-hole about it is why LA is so vilified and will probably never gain my forgiveness.

I'm in full agreement, but to me, his scorched earth policy was as predictable as his cheating. Shouting down is an old method, nothing new here to see.

And again, he was an a-hole, no doubt. But so is most everyone going through a divorce, I don't see as much scorn heaped on them.

I don't agree with the comparison to a divorce as equilavelent.
I guess that is my point of note.
One could surmize that in LA's position he had no choice but to obliterate the questioners. He was ruthless.
Without empathy. Dangerous. I don't think he is strong enough to be honest with himself on that.
For that he deserves some pity for being such a failed Human.
