Johnny Coast with fresh paint & nearly done.
hey friends,
Here are a few pics of my old Johnny Coast in new paint. The color is Porsche aubergine. It was painted by Peter Weigle up in Connecticut. I built it up with a bunch of parts that I like to use not really worrying about correctness. It shifts and brakes beautifully. I need to add the rack, fenders, lights and wrap the bars. I'm thinking of going Campy 8 or 9 speed ergo. I have no real experience with it but most people seem to love it. The pics are on my Flickr. I've been unable to master posting pics on this site. They're always too big to upload & I don't know how to shrink them. Thanks for checking it out!

Very nice. With the new paint, she's really stunning! The color is gorgeous! I noticed that bicycle in your Flickr stream a while back. What is the saddle? Don't think I've seen one quite like that...

Thanks, yeah the saddle was done by someone you know...he did an incredible job on that Norman saddle of yours! I wonder if I could convince him to do one for my Bates. Rudi? Are you seeing this?

About the Coast, did you ride it any before you repainted it? Just curious... Also, he gave a presentation at a recent Cirque. He's a really entertaining guy and very laid back. The kind of guy you could hang out and talk to all day if you had the chance.

Here you go. What a great color. I had a bike that color many years ago, looked great with yellow tape. But there are probably lots of good choices. Hope you don't mind me posting the pic; wouldn't want anyone to miss it.

It was pretty sure it was one he made. The one that's on the Norman now actually has stamps for an Invader, so I'm commissioning one for one of my Rapides.

As far as Johnny goes, he's a great guy. easy to work with and very smart & creative. His work while always very good has become great over the years. I'm planning on having him build a 650B city bike for me one day soon. His shop is amazing also. Like it's from another time. Its an ancient stone building at the bottom of a dead end st. in Brooklyn. If you find yourself in the area, try to check it out.

Click on the image in flickr. Then right click on it and select the image size. Then right click on it again and select 'copy image address'. Insert that in your post using the insert image icon. There might be a simpler, more direct route but that's how I do it.

I rode it quite a bit when I first got it but the paint wasn't applied well and got worse & worse. I was deterred by the cost of a repaint so it sat for a while. I stupidly had it powder coated which always looked bad. I never really rode i that way. I finally got around to having it painted & when Peter agreed to do it I jumped at the chance.

He's also told a story or two about these frame-building/brazing parties with some of other builders. They sound like a real hoot.
