New but it ain't steel & it may be fugly

I had no intention of looking for one of these but the recent threads on Kijiji and craiglist made be do a quick local search,

86 ish Alpine series, low miles, nice shape, $80, couldn't refuse. Trailer material.

6 sp Exage Mountain drivetrain with Sun rims. All the bearings need refreshing but it's certainly bright! And US made of course. I'm happy.

....$80.00, American made, decent components, Hell ya, I'd have scooped on it in a second. Nice catch....

You should be happy!!! A bargain at twice he price (well, maybe not twice..) I could be a bit biased

Very happy in a "I've been given a cute puppy" kind of way. It took time to reduce my fleet of unwanted mtn bikes and now I've got 4 or 5 again.

I used to ride an R500 and a T1000, both of which were great purpose built bikes. It's good to have at least one old C-dale in the stable again.

What a great find and all the original yellow "highlights" seem to be in very good shape as well--- not to mention the top tube cable guides. That's a real plus! :thumb:

Great buy. I passed on an identical bike about a year ago because the guy wanted $300 for it. You did well.

Italuminium 05-13-14 04:50 AM

I don't find thisbike to be fugly at all, aside from the stem and the dork disc, but that's easily fixed.

qcpmsame 05-13-14 05:38 AM

Nothing fugly about it at all, it should cleanup well and those older 'Dales are good solid riders. I'd scoop one up in a heart beat, granted the last 3 bicycles I've owned were/are Cannondales. NIce score in my book.

clubman, That's going to clean up nicely, great score.

"I'm happy."

Does anything else matter?

Very nice bike.

Not as cute as a puppy, but easier to train. Resale value is better, too. :thumb:

I should have called it Pugly...(apologies to all pug lovers)

Which leads us to another point. Once trained, a puppy will come when called. I've never had a bike that would do that.

We would have raced to grab that bike. :)

WNG 05-13-14 11:53 AM

Nah! Beauty is skin-deep. And Cannondales are well-loved. I'd snatched it up in a hearbeat. Great price, it's in nice shape.

mechanicmatt 05-13-14 04:00 PM

I used to have a bike with the exact same component set, year, u-brake and all. The brakes and brake levers can be quite complicated to adjust, otherwise a good groupo.

clubman 05-13-14 04:48 PM

Funny how all the encouragement is making the bike grow on me and I'm now scheming to implement some modest enhancements. Thanks. Will post in Vintage mtn bikes thread when done.

RobbieTunes 05-14-14 07:16 PM

Stop. You seem to be convinced it's a value.

OK, let's put it this way: "...that thing hit every tree in the fugly forest."

So, send it to me. I'll pay shipping. Problem solved.
