Thoughts on a city bike crankset (44t max)

I'm building up a bike that will be a touring frame converted to an upright city bike. The bike will have a chain guard on that caps the size of the crankset to a 44T chainring. Since the crank will be so prominent with a single ring, I want something timeless and elegant. However, before you dive into Campagnolo, it is likely out because the majority of the components on the bicycle will be Japanese. I do also have a penchant for drillium...

I have some thoughts on what may be appropriate for vintage (Hint: TA!) but I'm interested in hearing what everyone else has to say.

I should mention that I am not opposed to new pieces as this build will blend both vintage and new, where appropriate.
For new cranksets, not too many options exist other than VO and Sugino (although I don't much like the new modern typeface on the Sugino cranks these days). And yes, the Compass bike Rene Herse cranks are gorgeous but $385 - $440 is quite out of the budget.

Last, the rear will have a derailleur anywhere from 8-10 speeds (the bike is spaced for 130mm) and I have not pulled the trigger on the derailleur I will be using but I'm leaning toward a Sun XCD. Not sure if that will help thoughts on the crankset but I felt it worth mentioning.

Any thoughts and/or examples are well appreciated!

Yep, that looks about right to me!
So, is 44 teeth and if so, are you interested in selling it?

A 44t on a 144BCD crank might look a little off, but these are pretty, even if they are campy clones.

not exactly 44t but close and could work as references in terms of 'various C&V' choices here.
both are being built for city riding in mind.

45t on Suntour Superbe Pro (144bcd) will be paired with 18t SS FW.

42t on Stronglight Mod 93 (122bcd). will be paired with 12-28 6spd as 1x6.

Thanks for the replies, IthaDan and Orangeology. I wish I could do 46T but the chain guard says 44T max.

Stronglight has also been one I've been keeping my eye on but track cranks seem to be tough to find. 42T could be good too. I'd like to maximize the amount of teeth the crank has though. I'll keep that one on the "maybe" list.

For new, other than the IRD's (which I do really like), I've considered Paul track cranks.
