Well, last Sunday, quite a few young fellas and gals were trying to ride fast, and I know of at least 2 DT steel bikes that gave them something to think about, not to mention a Surly with bar ends that was making people wonder about wasting money on aero. It was nice being able to precisely grab 4 gears either direction, if necessary, without looking, and end up dead silent, centered on a cog, or simply slam the FD in/out as needed, without worry. Rolling hills and sudden up/down grades tend to favor good indexed DT shifters.
If I'd have been on modern kit and caboodle, I agree with you, grab some Ergos, where at least you can go 2-3 cogs and know the chain is going to end up on some teeth...which is why my modern Merckx rec'd a Campy switch today. Then again, I doubt any of those fast young folks would have come over to chat at rest stops if I'd been running just another modern bike with googa shifters.

I routinely pass CF bikes on my steel, it's not about the bike, as you well know.

I also have an '85ish De Rosa SLX, identical to this one except in blue. It definitely had the 'SL' style sticker, before it flaked off. My hunch was that it was very early in SLX production and they didn't switch over to the new decals yet.
One thing to note is that the (supposed) '86 models pictured have both chain stays chromed (and "real" SLX stickers), while OP's and mine have only the drive side chromed.

Congrats on your De Rosa, you will really enjoy riding it no matter what gruppo you put on it.

I really think the parts should be determined by what the OP intends. If he wants top performance, there is no question that hot rodding is the way to go. I'm with jj, I'd go with centaur. It's a very nice bike, but there are plenty of De Rosas like this around and there's no reason not to go modern. If you want to go the classic route, there's nothing wrong with that either. It's a beauty and there's something nice about a bike in its period correct glory. C-record is the most beautiful stuff around, but it's also PRICEY and heavy. I'd probably do a DA-C-record hybrid. DA derailleurs, shifters, freewheel and brakes. C-record levers, cranks, headset, and seatpost. A straight super record build would also be sharp.
Regardless, enjoy it!

I'm enjoying this thread, because I originally had the De Rosa in 10-sp Centaur (see the STI/Ergo thread). Then, when '85 Mr. Ed left the stable, after such an enjoyable climbing ride Sunday, I did a little figgerin' and the De Rosa is now 9-sp DA.
Where did the Ergo go? (neat shift, huh? Some would call it a segue, but those two wheels are on the same axle) Why, to my 2011 Merckx. I can completely relate to jiangshi, and since the MX-3 can handle the sweating, it's Er-going with the Campy. I ride it a lot more in hot weather than I will the De Rosa. And, I can completely relate to KonAaronSnake, as well. It's all relative, it seems.
Until my next build is done. We'll see, after that, and delicious, I'll get some pics up for you. Long time since I bought Cinelli from you.....

This thread is getting great responses thanks! If I hot rod it I will most likely put my Athena 11 Speed on it and get a cheaper group for my Gios. I also have a 98 Bianchi that is a little big on me and has Avanti on it (runs great), I could take that apart, clean it up and throw it on the Gios. Vintage is nice but I am hooked on brifters, and since I started using clipless I think my bright blue and neon yellow cleats would look pretty rediculous up against a pantographed crank.

OK, not to hijack the thread, but I was asked. Plus, to show the stays and SLX decal.
Drive side, 9-sp DA setup.
Note both chainstays are chrome, as on the non-red bikes in the catalog.
Note the SLX decal.
This is the weight, with pedals, cage, and Garmin mount.
This is when it was 10-sp Campy with ErGoGo's.

That is lookin' mighty fine Robbie. Only thing is, I'm a graphic designer by trade and I have always hated those Ksyrium decals. I much prefer the look of open pro's, only 1 decal. Other than that, mine will most likely look just like yours (The old campy 10 sp setup) in it's finished state. Moving that Athena over to it is sounding better and better all the time.

actually, it is that I have seen the light. I used to obsess over all things campy. Once you ride it all and see some real nice 74xx kit you start to think it is beautiful. It's in the eye of the beholder.

Another frame I always wanted but never got around to getting. Yours looks cherry. Congrats and I'm jealous.

Toss in a Chorus or Record 10s hidden 5th ST crank, and some DP brakes, it's sexy as all get out. 74xx was nice, but Campy 10s is bellisimo. Silver all the way, carbon just doesn't look quite right on a red De Rosa, not that I wouldn't use it if it was in the parts bin. My wife's has carbon levers, mine got the silver...priorities

Perfection is whatever campy Ergos you prefer, some like the rounded, some like the new design. I like the new, my BFF like the rounded. We have different hands.

Note:
The Ofmega CX Cranksets are a little light and flexy for mashing / climbing but the Super Competizione is plenty sturdy with period correct kinda lines even without the flutes. And the Premier is probably as good as an older non-slant parallel Dura Ace derailleur across a seven speed I'll bet. Haven't ever ridden the Dura Ace but the Premier is pretty much along the design of a Crane.

Red may be fast, but...
Red isn't the only sexy DeRosa on the street. Some like it more sublime...
This one has both chainstays chromed, and no chainstay bridge. Not a fan of Delta brakes, but what the heck.
The main point is that they ride oh so sweet, esp on tubies.

Any ideas as to why my 27.2 mm seatpost absolutely refuses to go into the 27.2 mm seat tube?? It goes into about a 10th of the way and gets absolutely stuck. It is greased if you are wondering. Worried I'm damaging the frame as it is shredding bits of metal of my seatpost, I'm not going to force it, I don't have the strength anyways. The binder screw is loose and moves from side to side freely. I'm at a bit of a loss.

Thanks for the replies. I tried 2 different 27.2 posts (A new Deda and one that was pulled off a 98 Bianchi), the Bianchi one actually went in further but still got torn up by the seat tube. I will look into 27.0 posts as an option. I contacted the seller who had taken the og parts off the bike and said the campy seatpost came out easily and was always greased. I would have to research reaming as an option as I've never done such a thing before.
