New craigslist buy, ID Help
I picked this bike up off of craigslist yesterday for $65. I want to convert it to a fixed gear if I can. I originally thought from the craigslist ad that the seat was a brooks leather saddle, but, when I saw it in person, it appears to be a different brand but still a quality leather saddle. I figured just the price of the saddle alone would pretty much justify this buy. I have no idea what the bike is though. The owner said he got it late 60's or early 70's and figured it was from that time. Some of the parts say Schwinn approved on them, thus is it a Scwhinn? The bike needs some work and cleaning, but overall, I think it will clean up fine. But I will appreciate all the id help I can get.

Definitely a Schwinn. The saddle is a low end Ideale product (Ideale 39, BIM 39, Norex 39, all the same). The most common complaint about that type of saddle is that they are small.

Yes make it a Fixie as it is a very low end frame. All you need is the fixed gear that will fit your threads on the rear wheel. Should cost you around $40 with new tires.

Good point >> I did use a old BB ring to lock mine and it has been on there for five years with no trouble. I would think anyone who is going to build a fixie will have read all he can find on Google. I like single speeds better than fixie.

You can verify the frame build date by checking the serial number on the base of the headtube. It appears to have been repainted, however all of the components seem to be original. Except of course for for the saddle, which may now be the most valuable part on it.

Thanks for the info everyone, I will look for the serial number tonight when I get home. I will also make sure to set up the back wheel such that the gear doesn't just spin off. I'm not really sure if the wheels on the bike are salvageable or not, if not, I might take the 27in wheels off my Miyata and convert the Miyata to 700c and upgrade its wheels.
