Reynolds 501 VS Peugeot HLE,
Looking at two bikes from similar eras, HLE framed bike is quite a bit cheaper but overall components are not too dissimilar. How much better than the HLE is the 501?

Always go for the better frame if you can still afford it, as it will always give back more performance potential if you decide to mod it up later.

I have a Canadian-built HLE Peugeot that I bought for $5 about 7 years ago. I never liked it, and it used a 15/16" (23.8 mm) seatpost, so I was sort of forced to keep the too-short, steel seatpost with a crappy clamp. It's in my parents' garage, so I use it when I visit them if it isn't the height of winter in Pennsylvania. It was the last bike I built in the short period where I lived with them after college.
