Don't laugh too hard.
But it's mechanical components are amazingly sound, not much wear on the chainrings and the bottom bracket is smooth.
After removing some of the "modifications".
It's got potential, I guess.

I like the "positive feedback" (or "self-energizing", if you prefer) brakes in the as found pic. Y'know, apply brakes: weight thrown forward onto hands, stopping force increases beyond that intended... repeat until endo.

I got the cranks off and took apart the bottom bracket and headset- all is well. I'm torn between a restoration in the original color (silver), or building the bike like I would like- burgundy paint, Ideale saddle, Newbaums bar wrap, new decal set, hammered fenders and more upright bars- Is this bike rare enough that I should keep it original? I'm thinking not.
Keep the Simplex drivetrain or replace with Suntour Symmetric/7 speed?

I don't think that this bike has to be kept original at this point, the original finish is a bit rough and the plastic derailers may already have cracks for all I know.
Glad to hear the mechanicals seem good, and hopefully the post not stuck.
If you have a favorite color, I say why not?
I went to a local vintage Japanese Motorcycle Show and Swap each day this weekend, and some of the incorrect re-paints were pleasant to look at to say the least.
Hearing some of these old bikes run made my day.

My PKN-10 (immediate successor to the PR-10) was one of the best-riding, most versatile bikes I have ever owned. Paint it if you like, but the finish is original only once, and yours does not look that bad to me. I actually did swap in a SunTour Cyclone II rear derailleur, which was very easy to fit to the 1980 Simplex dropout. Assuming it fits you properly (a problem in my case), it is definitely a keeper.

This has turned into something of an obsession for me. I think it may be an escape from the realities of everyday life, but I feel compelled to use as many French parts as possible in this restoration. The original Simplex rear derailleur had some funky wheels, but I pirated the wheels from an old Huret derailleur to repair it. I was lucky the bike still had all of it's original components, but the original front derailleur is Delrin plastic and broken. But the same donor bike that gave me the derailleur wheels gave me a Huret front derailleur, so that's going on there. It will have a nice patina'd Ideale saddle with the original steel seatpost and clamp. I've even figured out a way to refinish the silver paint in the same style as original. The original red, white and blue stripe decals aren't currently available- may have to go with the world champion stripes. I also may have to replace the brake hoods with Dia-Comp or Cane Creek. Not enough cash for OE Mafac stuff. 
Oh, and the giant chrome dork disk and reflectors won't be replaced-
But can't wait to ride this old bike.

Cool bike. I'd hold off on the paint too. Clean and wax, and get the components all dialed in. Maybe the patina will grow on you. Make sure to post updated photos too.

Why not use the Huret RD? Rather than have mismatched FD and RD.

Sitting here scratching my head, at people saying the paint is not that bad. That is beyond any polishing. Toast, if you prefer. However that is an awesome find, and I for one wouldn't mind seeing it done up in a custom(or even stock) color so long as you get new decals etc.,,,,BD

I've been working on the bike little by little and have reconditioned most of the parts. After unwrapping the layer of cheap vinyl tape on the bars, I found what had to have been the original, thoroughly rotten, cotton bar tape from '77 . As Bikedued mentioned, the OE silver paint was gone from sun and exposure, but looking at the good paint under the headtube badge, I matched as best I could the small flake silver the bike came with. Just shot it today, it came out well.
Next weekend, the decals go on and maybe a first ride!
