60's Carlton Catalina
...I got it from a friend here, who thought it was from 1962, but the catalog pages online list different components for that year, so I don't know.Anyway, today was the first ride, over to get some coffee and a pastry at Panera Bread, nearby. Blew out the rear tube at the stem while eating the pastry, but there's a Performance Bike in the same strip mall, so no harm, no foul. As you might expect it seems to ride a lot like a Raleigh Super Course of a slightly later era. Has that nice open feel to it, like floating on a cloud over the asphalt.

Wow, nothing to add, but that is a beautiful bike! I thought I was feeling content with my rides here until I saw that one. I'd love one.

Beautiful color and contrasting graphics - great to see one in such nice condition too.

Wow, what a wayback machine… Could be from 1964, the year when family bought a pair. Same color too. Knowing the bike shop, they could have had stock on hand for a bit… I think it really needs gum wall tires. Looks 32/40 spoke configuration too. These bikes are terrific. Full 531 straight gauge throughout. Love the cable through the stem, such positive feel, when you compare to a bike with a headset mounted yoke.

I, too, was startled by the paint and chrome condition. I know Carlton made a big deal in their
ad literature about their chrome, so maybe it had some basis in fact.
I've had one other bike in a similar paint scheme, and everyone who sees them likes them.
I'm a little vague on how they got that "Flamboyant" effect ? Anyone know ? Is it a metallic
paint or is it some sort of under layer that shows through ?
a Rudge badged Flamboyant Red bike of confusing parentage.

Never mind, I found it.
[h=2]Flamboyant Colours[/h]Flamboyant paints are translucent coloured paints sprayed in a number of coats over a silver or gold base coat. There is no pearl in the flamboyant paint itself but the sparkle and light reflections come from the base coat which shines through the flamboyant top coat in daylight.

The transfers are not clear coated, nor are the foil bits.
The chrome is almost bulletproof. the Williams cranks, the pedals, the rims, the headset all are quite durable.

from https://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/details/dating.htm, (and many thanks to the person who researched this)
Early frame numbers were prefixed with a letter. They were stamped on the left side rear dropout. Armed with this I find my frame number and it appears the bike is 1962

Maybe someday you'll be able to save up and get a new bike.

Those chainrings ain't bad looking, either. I am not a Huret Allvit fan, having had one on my first road bike, but you are probably right to keep the OEM components, other than tires and brake pads.

...this one is for sale down in the Bay Area near here. Not pristine, by any stretch, but pretty good looking in the photos.
A decent price, I think, but I don't think it's a 56cm. Looks more like mine, which is a 61 c-c.
