Trek 500 Series CL find!

So, full 600 gruppo, Normandy hubs, 501Reymolds. I think it is an 84, not sure what model in tube series, but an excellent steal minus the blue tires. Any guesses to which model number? I am resisting the urge to look at serial number to play sleuth.

Would be a 1983 520 with a triple crank, pewter color, and caliper brakes. 1984 was taupe and had cantis, like this one below.

I don't think the '83s used the TT script.

It also does not have a model number written after the trek on the DT. It doesn't seem as if the label was removed, it just seems as if it was never there. Better pictures will come tonight (these were the CL images).

You are right, I looked up the '83 catalog. At that time Trek was still using the contrasting section of paint on the seattube to distinguish "Trek".

I think it is a 520 from 85 given that link. Although I swear it has 27' wheels on it right now. I will have to check when I get home.

I don't know much about Treks, but I would not resist the urge to look. I would be interested in knowing if the 600 group is original. I have my doubts along with the Normandy hubs. Based on what I could see of the seat cluster, it is not later than 84. @Ex Pres is likely correct about the script. My 84 610 has the 600 series script on the chain stay, or did. BTW, the 500 family is has tube material as a common thread with variations in geometry and group configuration that determines the final two digits. 510 is a sport frame, 520 a touring frame, etc. A 560 would be the race version. See this page for more info: Trek Bike Models by Year and Color

A full break down would be nice but I haven't seen one.

Edit: Just looked on the link above and found new cats with full descriptions. Yours might be a 510 and the script on the TT was there in 84.

Same site I used. The Normandy hubs (and I identified them as such when I was exhausted, will double check that as well when I got home, that might be OP error) the 27" wheels, and the fact that it is 18 speeds rather than 15 contradicts the original wheelset of the 85' 520, but the paint scheme and original component group being shimano 600 agrees. As far as the seat cluster goes the pinch bolt goes through the stays, is not above as in the frames previous to '84. It also has double bottle bosses, which seems to have been a new 500 series feature as of '85.

What does the downtube say? If it's an 84, it'll have the model name. If it's an 85 it'll just have Trek. It also may have the model name on the chainstay protector. If it's an 83 or earlier it will have the wraparound decal.

Downtube just has trek, The chainstay is dirty and in the dark I could not make out anything. And of course no wraparound decal. Looking at the 85 catalog I am sad it isn't a 510.

Many would disagree with you and think you scored pretty big with a 520.

On looking at the catalog, it seems your bike has the same hubs as the 720. That front hub is great. Some people have had trouble with the rears. Just make sure it's greased well and replace the bearings if they need it.

Between a 510 and a 520, I would take the 520. If the seat stays terminate in a socket of the seat lug, it is newer than 1984. IIRC, 85 and newer were assembled in Japan with 84 the last year of partial build in Wis.

[SUP][/SUP]According to vintage trek 96 was the last year 520s were made in the US.

I rode this thing on the 700x38 wheels it is downright plush. Normady competition front hub must be a replacement.
