The green one is from 1971. I just picked up the frame set a week or so ago and built it up today. I still need to install some fenders & lights. Anyone have a blue or red bluemels front fender? I have a rear of each and busted fronts on both. The purple bike I've had for a while. It's a little more heavy duty. It was built with a tandem tube set in 1998 by Norman Taylor. It's among the last bikes he made. I still need to install lights on this one. I've got a chrome '55 tourist I'm slowly working on and a yellow '62 International I need to put back together. These bikes really do have something special in the way they ride. No matter how you build them they really do just ride right. I don't know how to explain it but when you ride one you'll know what I mean. Anyway, thanks for looking.

Yep. Comes down to the builder knowing his/her, ahem, "stuff". And no, not just brazing and making it look pretty. (In fact the Taylor bros had a rep for workmanlike - not stellar - finish work) The important stuff is getting the fit and geometry right and selecting the right tubes. Not "tube set": the best individual tube for each location in the bike. A lot of master builders (Albert Eisentraut for one) were known for mixing and matching tubes. Rumor has it that my Rainbow Traut is a mix of Columbus and Ishiwata. THAT's the kind of attention to detail that makes for an outstanding frame.

ps - if you ever come across a 65cm/25.5" Taylor Tour of Britain, let me know. Then again maybe you shouldn't - I get in enough trouble over bike stuff already.

Beautiful!

I'm not sure about that workman like reputation. The paint on the earlier bikes is nicer than any others Ive owned Except maybe the Redcays. The fillet brazing is excellent on both of those frames.
Funny, someone just asked me to keep an eye out for a 63 CM frame,

very nice! where did ya get them?

very nice Carradice, it was a great trade. Let me know if you come by any 59-61 Jacks :)

puchfinnland 07-25-14 05:06 AM

thats a nice pair!

Very nice. 'The purple bike' looks and sounds like a great workhorse. Tandem tubes, eh? Great looking crankset/rings as well.

Shaneferd 07-25-14 05:04 PM

I'd love to see an image of your '71 Tourist's rear shifter cable, where it transits the bottom bracket. Been wondering if that's integral through or passes out & around. You've done a nice job building them up, compliments for making them 650b wheelsets fit.

redcaymatt 07-25-14 10:09 PM

Hey Shane, I'll get some pics up on Flickr. The transitions on the cable runs are pretty amazing. Real shop craft.

Hey Mat,

If you ever bring the Purple Ruff Stuff over to Steve's....or for that matter, if you ever tire if it and want to sell it.....I'd like to see it.

Sweet pair of JT's, you should be very happy!

Andrew

So these JT's are local to mid atlantic? Let's have a JT party. I'm still interested to know where they were purchased from as well.

Will do, have you do any more work on the cable frame? That thing is very cool.

I'm in Central N.J. I'm in For any J.T. festivities, lets make it happen. The two bikes in these pics are from a guy I met Through the Flickr Jack taylor group. The International I bought a Via in Phili and the Chrome '55 I got at a weird flea market in Southern N.J. Are you on the Flicker Jack Taylor group?

Velognome 07-26-14 02:28 PM

Stalled for now on the cable frame......I'll get back on it when the snow flies

all of that above except the weird South Jersey flea market. I know Curtis at Via, I'm on the JT flickr group. The JT i just recently bought was listed on that group for a bit.

Maybe in September we can have a ride.

I'm pretty sure the ladies that was originally purchased with that bike (I could be wrong) Is still for sale on "A Great Vintage" site

A Great Vintage » Show Ad - Road-Vintage Lightweights - U.K - Yorkshire - York YO41 5SD - Jack Taylor custom-built Ladies mixte solo

$1600. is a little to much for a bike my wife will never ride. But a cool example none the less.I'm definitely up for a ride in september. Maybe we could get a few others in on it.

-holiday76 07-26-14 08:36 PM

you are right. Someone said there was a JT touring trailer on that site as well. Wish I hadnt missed that.
Perhaps we can make the ride a British only ride so we can include some others :)

Shaneferd 07-27-14 07:50 AM

holiday76 - Your bike is quite lovely, an elegant example of Norman's skill. The '52 model catalog offers a similar finish in metallic grey lustre for their early Tourist, nice to see you've picked it up.

Slowly working out the details on one myself, the fellow you've gotten yours from overseas has sold me a fine set of Constrictor Boalloy rims for the wheelset. Oddly enough, the serial number isn't stamped on the rear Agrati dropout, but checks out as #2879 on the steerer tube.
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9ce6a150.jpg

There is an integrated tube in the non-drive top eye, which routes an actuator cable to the JOS Type X dynamo mounted directly into the seat stay.

http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/...psab1b2187.jpg

Early modified Simplex wire cage, along with original reinforced Lefol mudguards. JUY 39 tandem changer up front, still haven't sussed out the original mech to fit that proprietary braze on with a threaded nib underneath...

Tecalemit nipples at the bottom bracket & rear of the headtube, haven't seen that particular fitment on a Taylor model previously:
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3071085c.jpg

Tentatively working out a 6 or 12 speed retro~direct transmission, with this Cyclo tension arm sprung rearward & a Sturmey Archer AW hubgear w/threaded driver. It will either work beautifully or not all, quite a versatile frameset in regards to configuration.

Perhaps an archival search for this fellow would yield some clues, Thornele is a fitting name for this well thought out frame. I love them particular downtube transfers, and the black on black provides a subtle contrast in their presentation:

I had hoped to have it ready for Centenario Bartali, home improvements & my Family adventures have been the good business lately.
Here's to them busy builders, who've created a wealth of cycling opportunities for the fortunate enthusiast.

That's a beauty Shane, I love the black and yellow. It's like a hornet.

Hey Shane,

I added those pics to the Flickr Jack Taylor page showing the mods. Strange stuff, but works surprisingly well.
