A pair of 650b Jack Taylors

The green one is from 1971. I just picked up the frame set a week or so ago and built it up today. I still need to install some fenders & lights. Anyone have a blue or red bluemels front fender? I have a rear of each and busted fronts on both. The purple bike I've had for a while. It's a little more heavy duty. It was built with a tandem tube set in 1998 by Norman Taylor. It's among the last bikes he made. I still need to install lights on this one. I've got a chrome '55 tourist I'm slowly working on and a yellow '62 International I need to put back together. These bikes really do have something special in the way they ride. No matter how you build them they really do just ride right. I don't know how to explain it but when you ride one you'll know what I mean. Anyway, thanks for looking. |

Yep. Comes down to the builder knowing his/her, ahem, "stuff". And no, not just brazing and making it look pretty. (In fact the Taylor bros had a rep for workmanlike - not stellar - finish work) The important stuff is getting the fit and geometry right and selecting the right tubes. Not "tube set": the best individual tube for each location in the bike. A lot of master builders (Albert Eisentraut for one) were known for mixing and matching tubes. Rumor has it that my Rainbow Traut is a mix of Columbus and Ishiwata. THAT's the kind of attention to detail that makes for an outstanding frame.

Very nice. 'The purple bike' looks and sounds like a great workhorse. Tandem tubes, eh? Great looking crankset/rings as well.

I'd love to see an image of your '71 Tourist's rear shifter cable, where it transits the bottom bracket. Been wondering if that's integral through or passes out & around. You've done a nice job building them up, compliments for making them 650b wheelsets fit.

holiday76 - Your bike is quite lovely, an elegant example of Norman's skill. The '52 model catalog offers a similar finish in metallic grey lustre for their early Tourist, nice to see you've picked it up.

Slowly working out the details on one myself, the fellow you've gotten yours from overseas has sold me a fine set of Constrictor Boalloy rims for the wheelset. Oddly enough, the serial number isn't stamped on the rear Agrati dropout, but checks out as #2879 on the steerer tube.

JUY 39 tandem changer up front, still haven't sussed out the original mech to fit that proprietary braze on with a threaded nib underneath...
