Fork Crown Race Setter Tool My Version
I know this has been done before.......
Fork Crown Race Setter Tool $5.73 + Tax
1" Copper Coupling $1.88
1" X 12" Black Nipple $3.85
It worked perfect. I taped them together just so I would not loose both pieces.

We used something very similar at the first shop I worked at. If you turn an old crown race upside down it gives a larger surface to 'tap' on then you don't even really need the copper tube.

I just use the 1 x 12 steel pipe. Wouldn't the copper be too soft for whacking a steel crown race into position?

PVC pipe. Does not damage the race. You have to replace it eventually, but if you do you are installing a lot of crown races.

Good approach! I used a steel pipe. It really doesn't take much force to place one. Tap gently! Before installation, measure both ID and OD. Should not be more than .002 interference. Paint will impact the OD on the crown so clean it off. The installer of the Super Record Crown race wherever the it happened failed to clean the paint off resulting in a broken race. The SR race is not as robust as the NR race and are subject to failure upon installation.

I don't recommend pounding on too hard in that position; it's a bit hard on the leather sofa

My crown race setter tool is a 1" hole drilled into my wood workbench. I put the race on the fork, and I put the steerer into the hole. Bang on the underside of the fork crown with a mallet. Done.
