Extra holes in a quill stem?

Spotted an older (1970's) quill stem with a couple of holes drilled in it. Right on the top, as viewed from the riders perspective. Small, with one maybe 5/8" in front of the other. Both holes are tapped, so presumably this would have been to attach something and not an odd attempt at drillium. Any guesses what these might have been for?

Maybe a custome job to hole a watch or something. I seen pics of people doing it along the quill portion for bells.

can you post a pic? I've seen quill stems with bottle bosses on them.

I did this for a centerpull brake cable stop.

Didn't ATX or someone do that stock, like maybe on a Peugeot?

Apologies for having taken the photo with a ham sandwich. My computer died, and I'm stuck trying to use my phone for everything.

The watch idea makes sense. Its on a weight weenie stem that came with weight weenie bars.

Doesn't go all the way through though, in this case.

They had something mounted there. Maybe a computer or a stop watch. It's not factory. The holes are out of line.

At first I was going to say it's for a bell, however using a striker type bell mounted in that orientation might be ergonomically weird. Not sure. Only the Shadow Knows....

Yikes!, that's some ham-fisted mod the PO did on that stem.....The dang holes don't even seem to line up properly with the stem extension axis and are off to one side!
Like noted, most likely to mount an accessory of some sort like a computer head or even a headlight.....who knows....
the holes look small enough to not be an issues structurally for the stem. maybe you can just fill them in with JB weld lightly sand it down and polish it over to make them blend in.....

I've got no doubt it's for something aftermarket. I've seen a copy of the SR catalog, and the examples there don't have these holes.

3ttt Superleggero bars, en suite with a stem that came with titanium hardware... Whatever was there, I suspect Grant Pedersen wouldn't approve of it

Let's see, Oval stamp Cinelli stem… 26.4 bar design capacity. 3ttt superleggero bars…. 26.0 outside diameter…. unfortunate stem drilling…. non standard lightening cut to the clamp area of the stem… Time for the stem to go. Or, up the insurance limits and lower the deductibles on your policies.

I would suggest a 3ttt in the length of your choice. later Cinelli stem designed for 26.0 bars would work, but these are not that easy to identify.

GB did that and I did it on a Cinelli as the stem is quite beefy but in this case there are other factors.

They're not Cinelli, it's a SR "New Royal Extra Super Light" stem. Clamp cut is factory made. Only modification between this example and the catalog are the two small tapped holes.

And lots of dirt-drop and MTB stems come that way. I have at least three of them on bikes and in parts bins. All of them quill stems, just the way they came from the factory, not customized.

(Oh geeze, I'm not mansplaining, am I? If so, i apologize.)

Not a Cinelli? Then definitely change it out. SR did make stems with that forward cut out, and I have seen too many fractured.

That little oval logo on top had me thinking Cinelli too. But the pic is fuzzy.

Sorry 'bout that. Given the computer problems I have at the moment, my cell is the only means I have of getting a photograph online. Less than stellar in the photographic department, sadly.

Plug "SR Royal" into a Google Image Search, and you'll see a bunch of these. They used that same oval logo on a bunch of different components.
