Hello everyone!

I'm new here, so please forgive me if I'm duplicating what already is, but my search did not reveal any centralized "Identify-Motobecane" thread.

What I have here is a Motobecane bike. Judging by tubing marking, Adamas AX crankset, front logo and side decals style I would narrow manufacturing dates range to 1979-1983. However, I couldn't the bike identify by searching in available catalogs by the hardware lineup nor by the "Club" decal on the top tube. So I'm asking for forum's help to identify the model!

The bike is built from 2040 Hi-Res steel tubing, has Sachs-Hurret gear-shifting system (definitely ECO in the back) and Shimano Adamas AX OCTA-joint crank-set with Selecta-T 52-42 sprockets and Selecta-T BB (thread unknown), brakes are center-pull Weinmann Vainqueur 750. The bike now has new wheels and cassette but originally it had 5-speed Maillard cassette, Maillard hubs and Weinmann rims.

The frame has some numbers on it: 3109, 194802 and 228(9?)62(7?) on the BB shell and C(0?)54 on the rear drop-out.

paint looks good. i would say '79-'81. you may be able to find date codes on the components.

just a syntax correction: use 'freewheel' instead of 'cassette.'

Was disassembling the headset today and saw some 79 digits on the fork and 84 on the brakes.


Yesterday I looked twice through every page available via that very link. The only bike with Adamas crank-set there was a Profil which mine is not.

Bike like this, especially in the 70s- mid 80s did not change a lot from year to year so narrowing it down to further may not be possible. There was not enough innovation to require huge model year changes and with the big post 'boom' down turn in the US market most companies had little incentive to make huge changes.

When looking at Bianchi catalogs on the Bulgier site, I have found them to only show the top few models. Also the location of your bike may have a lot to do with it too. If your in Europe or Canada looking at US catalog you may not find your exact bike. Your Canadian Moto Club may be our Sport or Tourer. Also one thing I learned from the book the Dancing Chain, apparently in the '70s the French were known to substitute parts rather carelessly and if they were running '79 Clubs and ran out of Tourny brakes they had little qualms about putting the Vancouvers on.


Looks like a decent ride just enjoy it.

Bianchigirll, thank you so much for a thorough explanation! For some reason I was expecting the catalogs (some of which are indeed for US) to show every model available forgetting how huge Motobecane was. All that really makes sense now.

*And my CLUB is definitely a European one.
