Help with Schwinn Varsity rear hub?
So my bike, which i've been riding happily for two years, has become unrideable, and the back wheel goes all lumpy when there's any weight on it. It's a Schwinn Varsity, "Schwinn approved" hubs, and a two-piece axle with loose bearings. I can't figure out what the problem is, and every time I put it back together and get on it, it still wobbles all over, but the wheel may spin fine when it's on its back. When I put it back together, it has some play, and I've adjusted the only adjustment nut that moves (next to the gear-side cone). Neither cone will move, and while I haven't cleaned it yet, I don't think that would have such an effect.
Any ideas? What do I do next?

Sounds like the axle is broken. It should be one piece, not two.

If the rear hub is original Schwinn, the replacement axle should be 3/8" x 26tpi threading.
You'll have to figure out the length too, then install the replacement axle using a cone wrench or two. It's best to remove the freewheel when replacing the axle assembly, but you don't absolutely have to if you're persistent.
That bike is my favorite Schwinn color btw.

Your axle is indeed broken, have it replaced at your LBS since you seem to lack the technical ability and proceed for another several decades of use.

On the next axle, you don't adjust the rear cones on the drive side.

Wow. Really? I could've sworn it was some creative type of two-piece axle. It must've broken off really squarely, cause I'm not that dim, I swear. Is axle type important? Any recommendations for the new one? Other than one piece? Oy vey.

Another thing to consider is if you rode it with a broken axle clunking all over the place, you should check to see if the balls and bearing surfaces are still ok. The bike shop may be able to sell you a new axle, just ask for what dddd said above
"If the rear hub is original Schwinn, the replacement axle should be 3/8" x 26tpi threading."
If they can't help you, try and find a coop.
The trouble with the bike shop is that for them to replace the axle isn't very cost effective, as the labour hours can add up to more than what you could spend on an entire wheel replacement from a coop. Bring in your busted one and see if they have something that matches, give them their 20 buck and resume pedaling
