Schwinn Race spec'd with West German chain?
I'm posting this as a curiosity if nothing else. A while back my brother found a 60's Schwinn Racer abandoned in the Bushes in front of his house. It appeared the bike had been crashed as the front wheel was bent with a flat tire and one of the front brake arms were broken.y brother asked me to repair the bike if possible because he wanted to ride it. After scrounging some parts including new cables and some TLC I got it ride-able and looking good. What I found interesting was the chain. It was an 1/8" chain with "W.Germany" stamped on the links with what appears to be a "UNION" logo. A little checking shows they were also spec'd on some of the early Stingrays. The chain is in really good condition, but is was just short of being too worn so I replaced it.

All my 60's Schwinns came with Union chains. A few even had chrome plated master links. (I made sure to polish those up)

Schwinn didn't make any chains. Schwinn used chains from Union, Sedis and several other suppliers. Union also supplied many Schwinn pedals.
